The Bucknell women's lacrosse team overcame a seven-goal deficit to draw within a single strike in the final three minutes of regulation, but Holy Cross held on for a 12-11 victory on Saturday afternoon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Down 12-5 with 20:52 left to play, the Bison (2-9, 1-4 Patriot League) scored six unanswered goals, with Sarah Dohler and Sarah Galzerano each completing a hat trick by striking twice during that game-changing run. After Dohler converted on a free-position attempt at the 2:41 mark to make it a one-goal game, Baker Earl won the draw to get the Crusaders (5-8, 3-2 Patriot League) the ball back. Bucknell ultimately forced Holy Cross into committing a shot clock violation and regained possession with 55 seconds remaining. The Bison set up Morgan Steinhacker for the equalizer, but she was fouled while driving the net with 11 seconds on the clock. Her free-position attempt ultimately sailed wide, and the Crusaders backed up the ball to reclaim possession and run down the final seconds from the clock. Galzerano kicked off Bucknell's 6-0 run at the 18:38 mark of the second half, getting to a loose ball before Holy Cross netminder Julia Maloney and firing it into the empty net. Then, the Bison struck twice in just 21 seconds, with Steinhacker capitalizing on a free-position attempt at the 11:58 mark and Eve Calabria finding Mary Margaret Kenney alone in front for a goal at the 11:37 mark. Kenney's goal made it a 12-8 game. After Galzerano completed her hat trick by finishing off a Tegan Warren feed with 8:11 left to play, Dohler netted the next two goals to pull the Bison within one. At the same time Bucknell's offense began to click, its defense began to stymie Holy Cross's attack. In the second half, the Crusaders committed 12 turnovers and went 9-for-13 on their clears, failing on three-straight following their 12th goal of the contest. Holy Cross led 10-4 at halftime, bolstered by converting on six of its nine free-position opportunities. The Crusaders netted three free-position goals during the first five minutes of regulation and owned a 7-1 advantage by the 17:19 mark. While Steinhacker scored the first goal of the second half, Holy Cross notched the next two to take its largest lead of the game, a 12-5 advantage. The Bison held the Crusaders without a goal for the final 20:52 of regulation, but their comeback ultimately fell just short. Galzerano, who also registered an assist, led all players with four points (3g-1a). Dohler (3g), Lillie Hunt (1g-2a), Audrey Walsh (1g-2a) and Steinhacker (2g) also had multi-point outings for the Bison. With 10 draw controls, Steinhacker became the fourth Bison to reach the double digits in this statistical category in a single game. She finished one shy of Bucknell's school record, set by Bonnie Buechel against Saint Francis in 2007. Jamie DeWitt made eight saves, recording four each half, while Kenney caused a game-best three turnovers. Erika Stube led the Bison with four ground balls. Five Crusaders enjoyed multi-goal outings, led by Keely Connors (3g). Maloney made 15 saves while tying Stube for the game-high with four ground balls. Bucknell led in shots (40-28) and draw controls (16-9) while Holy Cross held edges in ground balls (16-14) and free-position goals (7-2). The Bison next face Ohio State on Wednesday, April 11 in Pittsburgh, Pa. before resuming Patriot League play at Boston University on Saturday, April 14.
