DELAND, Fla. – The Ohio State women’s lacrosse team put up an impressive rally against UMass on Monday afternoon on the campus of Stetson, but couldn’t complete a comeback against the Minutewomen, falling 15-14. The Buckeyes are now 6-2 on the season, while UMass improves to 4-2. THE SHORT STORY While UMass took the first lead of the game, Ohio State fought back multiple times to tie the score. A four-goal scoring run to end the half didn’t take the wind out of the sails for the Buckeyes, and the team came back with a run of their own to come within one goal of the lead early in the second half. The Minutewomen jumped out to a 14-9 lead at 10:55 in the second, and Ohio State then went on a tremendous 5-1 scoring run sparked by the first career goal for freshman Maura McGregor at 5:07. Parrott totaled three goals in the final three minutes, including one with just 42 seconds left on the clock, but the Buckeyes weren’t able to find an equalizer and came up just short of a comeback. MOMENTS THAT MATTERED • UMass got on the board first at 27:22, and OSU pushed back each time the Minutewomen got the lead, evening the score to 5-all at 7:52 with a free-position goal for Clare Johnston. • UMass went on a four-goal scoring run to end the first half, taking a 9-4 lead. • The Minutewomen added another goal in the first minute of the second half, but goals from McKayla Conti, Liza Hernandez and Sara Dickinson brought the Buckeyes within one. • UMass then went on a 5-1 scoring run to take its biggest lead of the game at 14-9. • The Buckeyes didn’t go quietly, scoring four straight goals with three minutes left in the second half. Parrott accounted for three of those goals, including a tally with 42 seconds left to bring the Buckeyes just one goal away from an equalizer. • UMass held off Ohio State’s attempt to force overtime, prevailing 15-14. THIS AND THAT • Ali Beekhuizen and Parrott led the scoring efforts with three goals each. • Parrott has scored multiple goals in seven games this season, four of which have been three or more. • The hat trick was Beekhuizen’s second of the season, and her fourth multi-point effort this season. • Freshman Maura McGregor scored her first goal as a Buckeye at 5:07 in the second half. • With a goal and an assist, Hernandez owns the longest active consecutive scoring streak on the team at 10 games, dating back to last season. • Parrott has a nine-game scoring streak, also dating back to last season. • Jill Rizzo scooped up a season-high and game-high eight ground balls, making 14 saves for her third-most of the season. • The team accounted for 12 caused turnovers, two from Sage Darling and one from 10 different Buckeyes.
