Kayla Reilly and Melissa Placek combined for 14 points, leading Campbell over visiting East Carolina 17-8 in its home opener Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium. Campbell moved to 1-3 on the season, while ECU dropped to 1-4 Reilly tallied five assists, matching a career-high, along with three goals for eight points, while Placek found the back of the net a season-best five times, adding an assist in the win. Mackenzie Koeller also notched four goals, matching a season-high for the senior. Allison Waldhauser caused four Pirate turnovers and picked up three ground balls, while Kylie Haarhoff and Sydney Etheridge combined for seven saves. With the score knotted at 2-2 early in the first half, Campbell reeled off seven straight to go up 9-2 with 7:08 to go in the period, including three goals from Placek, with two coming off Reilly assists. Reilly and Koeller added two goals each in the run. An Ellie Allen strike, plus Placek's fourth goal of the first half, coming with 1:16 on the clock, gave Campbell an 11-4 lead at the break. The Camels continued the run into the second stanza, posting the first three goals of the half, and held on for the 17-8 victory. Emma Bowman and Lily Avazis led the Pirates with a goal and an assist each, while Abbey Smith collected a game-high five ground balls, adding 15 saves in goal. CU's 17 goals marked a season-high, while allowing a season-low eight. Campbell out-shot ECU 42-24, with 32 on target tries. Campbell will host former Big South rival Coastal Carolina next Wednesday, February 28 at 4 p.m.
