The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team won its second straight game, topping Canisius, 14-3, on Sunday (Feb. 18) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The Wolverines outscored their two opponents this weekend, 26-5. Eight Wolverines scored in the game, led by a career-high four goals from sophomore Chandler Kirby. Sophomores Lilly Grass and Nadine Stewart and freshman Maggie Kane each netted a pair of goals, which marked career highs for Stewart and Kane. Michigan's defense allowed limited opportunities for Canisius, holding the Griffins to an 11-for-18 clear-attempt mark and just four free-position attempts, only one of which they converted. The Maize and Blue also forced 11 of Canisius' 19 turnovers, with two caused turnovers each from Kane, Grass and juniors Casey Cummo and Madison Richardson. Junior goalie Alli Kothari earned her second win of the weekend, making two saves in cage. Michigan held the upper hand in every team statistical category, including a lopsided 31-8 shot count and 12-6 advantage on draw controls. Kane won a career-high six draw controls to lead U-M. Grass put Michigan on the board first with a free-position goal just under four minutes into the first half (26:34). Canisius answered to tie it up at 1 with 21:10 on the clock. Kane came out strong with back-to-back goals just 41 seconds apart to put the Wolverines up by two with 19:57 left in the first period. On the first goal, Kane's first free-position attempt was saved and she picked up her own rebound and scored from close-range. With 12:18 left in the first half, Canisius cut Michigan's lead to one, 3-2, scoring a free-position goal. Michigan responded by going on a 4-0 run that spilled into the second half. Stewart had two of the four goals, which book-ended the run, with the first the result of a pass from Brueckner at the 3:09 mark. With 2.6 seconds left in the first half, Kirby scored her first of four goals on a free position to allow the Wolverines to enter the locker room with the 5-2 advantage. The run continued into the second half, with an unassisted goal from freshman attacker Caitlin Muir, at the 1:29 mark. Today's game marked Muir's career debut and her first career goal, as she missed the first three games due to injury. The Golden Griffins slowed Michigan's momentum with their third goal of the afternoon at the 24:27 mark. Michigan's powerful offense continued to fight and finished the game on a 6-0 run. Freshman Erin Daly scored her first career goal off a FPA with 18:50 left in the game to give the Wolverines the 10-3 lead. Kirby dominated the final half of the game, as she scored three of the final six goals, to give her four on the afternoon. Kirby's four goals are a career high and put her in a tie for sixth for goals in a single game at Michigan.
