Jourdan Roemer tallied five goals including four second-half markers to help lead the Canisius women's lacrosse program to a 15-10 win over Siena on Wednesday afternoon. With the win the Golden Griffins improved to 6-5 overall and 3-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, while Siena dropped to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in conference action. The second half proved to be the difference maker for the Blue and Gold, as the team outscored Siena 7-4 to secure the victory. Roemer led all players, as she notched five goals and one assist for six points. Lauren Smolensky finished the game with a season-high four goals and one assist, while Marissa Malvaso tallied a season-high three goals. Rebecca VanLaeken improved to 6-5 overall, as she recorded eight saves and allowed 10 goals in the win. Sammy Horton got the start for Siena and took the loss, as she made 10 saves and allowed 15 goals. Canisius shook off a rough opening 10 minutes, erasing a two goal lead by the Saints, by scoring four-straight goals to take a 6-4 lead with 9:56 left in the half. Roemer started the run, as she buried a shot off a Jen Reininger pass. Smolensky made it 4-4 just under a minute later. Allie Stewart tallied her 13th of the season to give the Griffs their first lead of the game at the 17:09 mark. Rachel Ryan was credited with the assist. Meanwhile Smolensky capped the run at the 9:56 mark of the first half as she found a loose ball and cashed in. All-told the Blue and Gold scored six of the final eight goals of the first frame, following the early Siena advantage. Canisius opened the second half on a three-goal run, to it up its lead to 11-6. Roemer accounted for two of those markers, with Marissa Malvaso talliying the other. The Blue and Gold managed to keep the momentum going throughout the frame, outscoring the Saints 7-4 on the way to 15-10 victory. The Golden Griffins led the game with 11 ground balls, while Siena controlled the draw circle with 10 draw controls. POST GAME COMMENTS FROM COACH DALEY "Today was a great team win. We had a bunch of players step up in big ways and contribute. We need to continue to work on getting better and build upon today as we face another strong opponent on Sunday." GAME NOTES • Canisius improved to 15-6 overall against Siena in the all-time series. • The Griffs are now 5-4 all-time in Loudonville, N.Y. • The Blue and Gold have now reeled off 12-straight wins over the Saints, last losing in 2007. • Canisius has now won 27 straight MAAC regular season games. • Roemer and Reininger continued their point streaks as the duo have recorded at least on point in 31 and 40, respectively. • Smolensky's five-point game is a season-high for the senior. UP NEXT Canisius settles in for a pair of home games as the team will host Monmouth on April 8 and Marist on April 11. Game times are set for 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
