The Red Foxes played hard and fought tough, but Canisius came out on top 13-12 Wednesday afternoon. Summary Marist got off to a fast start with Lauren Mazza and Kelly George scoring to take a 3-0 lead three minutes in. But the Red Foxes would not be able to find the back of the next for the rest half with Canisius playing physical defense. After Canisius got on the board at 24:40 in the first half, both teams did not score for the next ten minutes with the Red Foxes' and Golden Griffin's defense applying great pressure. Canisius was able to break the ice at 11:58 and rattled off four more goals to take a 6-3 lead into the half. The second half featured the two teams going back and forth on scoring. Samantha Mehalick and Morgan Jaycox scored to get the Red Foxes with one goal but Canisius scored minutes later to extend its lead. The Red Foxes stayed within reach on the Golden Griffins throughout the second half, never trailing by more than three goals. Camille Renaud's fast break goal with seven minutes left brought the score to 13-12 advantage Canisius. The Red Foxes held the Canisius offense but were unable to capitalize on defensive stops to send the game into overtime. Stats Mazza and Mehalcik led the offense, both with hat tricks on the day. Renaud continued to be effective on both ends of the field, finishing the day with two goals, a game high four caused turnovers and a career high nine draw controls. Teams were fairly even on the day in stats, with Canisius holding a slight edge in shots (33 to 30), ground balls (20 to 17) and caused turnovers (10 to 9) while Marist lead in draw controls (15 to 12). Canisius was led by Allie Stewart who scored four goals. Records Marist falls to 7-5 and 3-1 in MAAC play will Canisius improves to 7-6 and 4-1 in conference play.
