THE BASICS: - Score: MIT 14, Coast Guard 13 - Records: MIT (5-3, 1-0 NEWMAC); Coast Guard (5-3, 0-1 NEWMAC) - Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium) - The Lead: Junior Graham Davis (Crofton, Md.) scored with just 1:26 left to cap off a rally from five goals down for MIT as the Engineers defeated the U.S. Coast Guard Academy by a thrilling 14-13 final on Sunday afternoon at Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium. HOW IT HAPPENED: - The Engineers got on the board just 1:10 into the first as Davis notched a man-up goal off an assist from senior Harris Stolzenberg (Weston, Fla.). Coast Guard answered with a 3-0 scoring run over a span of four minutes, seizing the 3-1 edge following an even strength tally from Matt Nagle. The teams traded goals over the final moments of the first as the visitors took a 4-2 lead into the second. - It was MIT that came out fast to open the second period as Davis, junior Mitch Turley (Westfield, Ind.) and freshman Aidan Westley (Palos Verdes, Calif.) all found the back of the net in a span of less than four minutes for the 5-4 Engineer lead. That lead was short-lived though as Jack Pope scored his 18th goal of the season for Coast Guard to tie the game at 5-5 with 9:07 on the clock. The Bears closed the first half on a 2-0 run though with goals coming from Blaise Curtis and Benner Geurtsen for the 7-5 edge at the break. Curtis came around the net and fired into the upper left corner for his fifth goal of the year, while Geurtsen's goal was his 12th of the season. - The Bears eventually stretched the lead to 10-5 behind a 6-0 scoring run, capped by a McNulty goal to complete the hat trick. Junior Jack Kelly (Milford, Del.), off an assist from Turley, put an end to the Coast Guard run though with his sixth goal of the year as the Engineers started a 6-0 run of their own to end the third, including the seventh goal of the season from freshman Jack Strachan (Monroe, Conn.) to tie the game at 10-10. MIT regained the lead with one minute left in the period as senior Michael Traub (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) notched his 11th goal for the 11-10 Engineer edge heading to the final 15 minutes. - MIT's run of seven unanswered goals came to an end with just under 12 minutes to go in the fourth as Ian Logan scored from 10 yards out to cut the Engineer lead to 12-11. Strachan scored his second goal of the game to make it 13-11 before Coast Guard tallied two goals in 39 seconds to tie the game for the final time at 13-13. - After each team forced a late turnover in the final minutes, Davis took a pass from senior TJ Burns (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) and turned it into the game winner as he ended the contest with a team-best four goals. INSIDE THE NUMBERS: - The Bears outshot the Engineers by a 40-33 margin overall, while MIT converted 16-of-19 clear attempts. Coast Guard held a 35-32 edge in ground balls, while MIT forced 18 Bears turnovers. - Davis led the Engineers with four goals, while Turley posted three goals and one assist and Kelly posted three goals.
