Ronan Jacoby and Tom Martello scored four goals apiece to help lead the No. 8 Wesleyan men's lacrosse team to a 13-8 season-opening victory over Bates on Citrin Field Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals outscored the Bobcats 4-1 in the second quarter to pull away as they open the year with a 1-0 mark. Bates, who was led by Jack Scribner's five points (3g, 2a), drops to 0-3 on the year and 0-1 in the NESCAC. GAME HIGHLIGHTS: The visitors got on the board first when Otis Klingbeil received a pass from Scribner in front of the goal as he sent his shot into the top right corner with 12:05 on the clock. The Cardinals evened the score just over a minute later as Logan Geller tallied Wesleyan's first goal of the year at the 11-minute mark. After another Bates goal, this time from Scribner to give Bates a 2-1 lead, Wesleyan would go on a 6-0 run and never look back. Kevin Moriarty started the stretch with an unassisted tally at the 5:40 mark and just 12 seconds later, Martello gave the home team its first lead of the game. The Cardinals opened the second quarter on a 4-0 run led by three goals from Jacoby. His goal with 4:01 remaining lifted Wesleyan's lead to five, 7-2. Scribner scored his second of the game just under two minutes later as the Cardinals took a 7-3 lead into the break. It took just 21 seconds into the third quarter for Wesleyan to get on the board as Pat Doherty placed one inside the top right corner during a player-up opportunity. The teams exchanged the next two points before the Cardinals opened the fourth quarter on a 3-0 run within a minute, essentially putting the game away as they led 12-4 with 13:23 to play. Bates didn't back down, however, and scored four unanswered goals to cut the deficit to four. The lead proved to be too much to overcome though as Wesleyan held on for the win. INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Wesleyan owned a 40-21 advantage in ground balls and a 48-35 lead in shots. The Cardinals were 1-for-3 on man-up advantages while Bates went 0-for-3. Otto Bohan recorded the win for Wesleyan as he made nine saves. Rob Strain stopped 17 shots for the Bobcats in a losing effort. UP NEXT: Wesleyan is back in action on Wednesday, March 4 as they play on the road against Coast Guard at 7 p.m.
