Sam Mlkvy scored a career-high four goals and added career-highs in both ground balls (seven) and caused turnovers (four), but it was not enough as host Marquette handed the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team a 19-15 defeat Sunday in Milwaukee, Wis., in both teams' BIG EAST Conference opener. The loss not only dropped the Bearcats to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST, but also halted UC's six-game winning streak while the Eagles improved to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in league play. // HOW IT HAPPENED Kate Carney scored at 26:57 to give the Bearcats an early 1-0 lead before the Eagles scored two in a row for a 2-1 lead. The back-and-forth continued as both teams traded goals before UC added a second in a row at 19:15 as Amanda Donovan found the back of the net to tie the game at 5-5. From there, the Bearcats scored three of the next four goals as Monica Borzillo netted one and Mlkvy two to give UC an 8-6 lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the opening half. But, Marquette would score four goals in a row to close out the half and turn a two-goal deficit into a two-goal lead at the break. UC struck first in the second half as Mlkvy grabbed her third of the game, but MU scored twice to take a three-goal advantage. After Carney and Mlkvy scored once again to pull UC to within two, the Eagles scored twice in a row and four of the next five to take a five-goal advantage. The two sides traded goals to close out the game with Maria Collachhi, Bridget Cleary and Borzillo closing out the scoring. // STREAK SNAPPED The Bearcats lost a game for the first time in over one month as they saw their program-record six-game winning streak snapped. Prior to today's loss, the last time UC fell in 2018 came in the season-opener on February 9 as Louisville scored a 15-9 victory in Cincinnati. Between those two losses, UC surpassed the school record for consecutive wins that was formerly five (2014). Despite the loss, the Bearcats are still one win away from tying the program record for wins in a season. // CAREER DAY FOR MLKVY The Eagles seem to bring out the best in Mlkvy as she once again recorded a career day against Marquette. In 2016, her freshman year, she scored her first collegiate hat-trick with three goals at MU and surpassed that today with a four goals. Mlkvy added two more career-highs as she picked-up seven ground balls on the day and caused four turnovers. Those totals also rank among the program's all-time Top 10 for a single game, placing her tied for seventh and tied for ninth, respectively. // BORZILLO MOVING UP With one assist today, Borzillo now has 50 for her career, making her just the second Bearcats player to do so. She is now 14 away from tying for the all-time record just eight games into her sophomore season. Borzillo added two goals on the day for three points, giving her 41 for the season to tie for the sixth-most in a single UC season. After breaking the single-season record last year with 73 points, Borzillo joined Laura Simanski (52 in 2009 and 44 in both 2010 and 2012) as the only Bearcats to record 40 or more points in more than one season during her playing career. // HUDSON GROUNDED Lauren Hudson secured five ground balls in the contest to lift her career total to 105, moving her into third on the program's all-time Top 10 ledger. She is now just two shy of the #2 position currently held by Paige Stratton's (2008-11) 107. // NISSEN DRAWING CLOSER Schuyler Nissen recorded four draw controls in the game to bring her career total to 93 tying her with Ali Mattingly (2009-12) for the sixth-most in a career at UC. Nissen also is just the sixth UC player to record 90 or more draw controls in a career.
