The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team set a program record with its eighth win on the season, knocking off ECU 16-7 in non-league action on a rainy Monday at Gettler Stadium. Taylor Gysin tied a career-high with four goals while Alyssa Adams netted her first career hat trick. Sam Mlkvy had a pair of goals and three assists while Monica Borzillo tallied a goal and three helpers. The Bearcats (8-8) and Pirates (2-14) will both be members of the American Athletic Conference for lacrosse next season, but ECU is playing as an independent in the first year of its program in 2018. UC's eight wins sets the program record for victories in a season. The Bearcats had won seven games in both 2009 and 2013. The 14 wins spanning the 2017 and 2018 campaigns is the best two-year stretch in the 11 years the program has competed at the varsity level. The Bearcats controlled the possession and led wire-to-wire in difficult conditions all afternoon. UC held a 19-6 advantage in draw controls, forced 25 turnovers and had 50 ground balls. Offensively the Bearcats had 39 total shots and 26 shots on net. The 50 ground balls and 10 assists were both season-high marks and the ground-ball total is the second-best tally in school history, behind the 52 picked up against Detroit in 2010. Adams had a career-best eight draw controls while Mlkvy added seven along with a career-high nine ground balls. // HOW IT HAPPENED UC jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the game's first 10 minutes. McKenna Rushford got the scoring started with her 34th goal of the year at 27:27. Mlkvy, Adams and Amanda Fess added to the tally to put UC up by four with 21:39 left. After ECU got on the board, the Bearcats had goals by Borzillo, Gysin and Adams in a four-minute span and it was 7-1 in favor of the home team. An ECU score closed out the first-half ledger and the Bearcats had a 7-2 edge heading into the locker room. The second half featured more of the same. Gysin, Kate Carney and Maria Collacchi scored in the first five minutes to move UC into double digits. ECU got one back ahead and the teams traded scores with Mlkvy netting her second, Ali Mazzola earning her first career goal, Amanda Donovan scoring her 17th of the year and Adams getting the hat trick. Gysin scored her final two goals in the last 1:48 of the game and UC closed it out with a 16-7 win. // CLIMBING HIGHER The Bearcats have set several single-season records with one game remaining in the 2018 campaign. UC has achieved a chart-topping mark in points (278), goals (193), assists (85), shots (479), shots on goal (349) and caused turnovers (177). UC also has 219 draw controls, 13 off the school-record number of 232 which was set in 2012. Some individual marks are in reach as well. Borzillo has 60 career assists in 33 career games and needs four to tie Katie Kiriazoglou (2010-13) for the UC record of 64 helpers. Lauren Hudson has started in 66 career games and will tie Courtney Curtis (2013-16) for the all-time mark of 67 with a spot in the starting lineup this coming Sunday. Giuliana Durso has 158 saves this season and needs three to tie Katherine Russo's single-season mark of 161 which she set in 2009 and 2010. // NEXT TIME The Bearcats will close out their 2018 season on Sunday (April 29) with a noon game at Gettler Stadium against visiting Villanova. The game also will serve as Senior Day for a trio of players, including Bridget Cleary, Lauren Hudson and Schuyler Nissen, with all three being honored ahead of the start of the contest. // FOLLOW US GoBearcats.com is your one-stop destination for all things UC Athletics.
