Augustana scored four goals in the first four minutes of the game Saturday and went on to post a 10-8 win over Alma at Thorson-Lucken Field. Senior Adam Borgetti (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) got the Vikings on the board and goals by classmates Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill) and Jason Van Dyck (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) made it 3-0 three minutes in. Tom Needham broke the Scots' goose egg, but Whorwell answered with an assist from sophomore Shane Forsythe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) and the hosts led 4-1 with 11:00 remaining in the first quarter. The scoring pace then slowed considerably. Borgetti's tally at the 4:21 mark was the only other goal of the period and Augustana led 5-1 after one. Alma responded by scoring the only three goals of the second quarter. The first two were by Connor Alley and Chase Hunyadi's 4:23 before halftime pulled the Scots to within 5-4 at intermission. Trevor Bailey's man-up goal two 2½ minutes into the third drew the visitors even for the first time since the opening minute of the game, but Van Dyck answered with a short-handed goal four minutes later and the Vikings had the lead for good. Another Van Dyck tally gave Augustana a 7-5 advantage before Alley scored in the final minute to make it 7-6 Vikings after three periods. Trever Moore (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Bailey traded goals to open the fourth, but Van Dyke assisted on a Whorwell goal with 6:48 to play and it wouldn't be a one-score game again. Jack Preston's (Morton HS, Morton, Ill.) goal just inside the five-minute mark made it 10-7 Vikings. Alma's Timothy Gearig closed the day's scoring with a goal in the final seconds. Whorwell and Van Dyke led the Augustana attack with three goals apiece. Borgetti added a pair. Junior Will Reece (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) had two assists.
