The Lafayette women’s lacrosse team couldn’t have ended its season with more drama than the events that took place in Hamilton, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon. The Leopards scored with 18 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime, but Colgate won it in the second overtime period as Lafayette closed out 2018 with a crushing 13-12 defeat. The game was extremely even throughout as neither team held more than a two-goal lead through the entire 60 minutes and overtime. A four-goal run for the Leopards late in the second half looked to put them in control with an 11-9 lead and 13:07 to play. However, Colgate stormed back with three of its own to lead by one at 12-11 with 1:27 on the clock. Working on the right side in the final minute, junior Hannah Davey found space and fired a shot on goal that beat the Raiders net-minder, but rang off the right post. Fortunately, sophomore Bella Alampi was on the spot as she picked up the loose ball and fired it into the net to tie the game at 12 and send it to an extra session. The first overtime was dominated by defensive play as junior Annelise Kinney picked off a pass on Colgate’s first possession and freshman goalie Quinn Lacy came up with a huge save late to close out the first three minutes. In the second overtime, though, Colgate won the draw and converted as Payton Gabriel beat Lacy on the high side to win it with a final of 13-12. Overall, it was an excellent showing for the Maroon and White against a team destined to make some noise in next week’s Patriot League Tournament. Lacy was sensational, finishing with nine saves on 32 shots faced, while Colgate’s Samantha Croston came up with 10 saves in the win. Alampi had one of the best games of her career, taking advantage of her opportunities all day long and finishing with a four-point outing of three goals and an assist. Junior Emma Novick joined her with a hat trick of her own, and classmates Hannah Davey and Jane Kirby chipped in with two goals apiece. Senior co-captain Kristin Schaen, playing in her final game for the Maroon and White alongside classmates Emma Hardy, Erika Mazer, Dana Smith and Anna Raymond, was excellent at the circle, leading her team to a 17-11 advantage in draw controls. Schaen picked up seven of those on her own, while freshman Colleen Bannon added six and Davey picked up four. Shots ended up at 33-32 in favor of the visitors and Lafayette also won the ground ball battle by a 29-26 margin. The Raiders victory gives Colgate a home game in the Patriot League Tournament and ends Lafayette’s season with an overall record of 5-12, going 2-7 in conference play.
