Erin Mammele hauled in a program-record 11 draw controls for Fairfield University Women's Lacrosse against visiting Columbia on Wednesday afternoon. Stags were paced offensively by a five-point day from Brenna Connolly and four goals by Taylor Mitchell, but the Lions came away from Rafferty Stadium with a 13-12 decision. After back-to-back one-goal losses, the Stags stand at 1-2 on the season. Columbia improves to 1-1. Mammele's 11 draw controls extend her own single-game program record; she previously brought down 10 draws in a win over Iona last April. junior also holds the single-season record after nabbing 86 draw controls last spring, and her 115 career draw controls to date rank her ninth all-time in Fairfield history. Connolly's five points this afternoon came courtesy of two goals and a team-best three assists. Through three games this spring, Connolly leads the Stags with 12 points (four goals, team-high eight assists). Mitchell's team-high four goals today marked a career high in both goals and points. Adding to the Fairfield attack, Kelly Horning and Brooke Gallagher each netted a pair of goals. Meaghan Graham notched a goal and her first career assist and Kathleen Hulseman potted a free-position goal to round out the scoring. In addition to Mammele's 11 draw controls in the midfield, Hulseman pulled down three. Brooke Gallagher and goalkeeper Paulina DiFatta shared the team high in ground balls with four apiece. In the cage, DiFatta made 12 saves for the Stags. The defense in front of her was led by two caused turnovers by Megan Beach. Columbia was led by four goals and three assists from Victoria Kalmaras and a hat trick by Alexandria Absey. Kelsey Gedin earned the win in goal, working the second half and making five saves. Abby Roberts made four stops over the opening 30 minutes for the Lions. After the visitors started the scoring, the Stags made the game's first run with goals from Connolly, Hulseman and Mitchell to take a 3-1 advantage. However, the Lions put together a 4-1 scoring stretch over the final 8:06 of the period to send the game into the intermission tied at 7-7. Columbia struck first in the second half – taking the lead for the first time since 1-0 – and played from in front for the majority of the period. The Lions scored five of the first seven goals of the second stanza to build a 12-9 cushion with 10:49 remaining. At that point, Graham struck for his first goal of the campaign and then connected with Horning for another marker that closed the gap to 12-11. Lindsey Ewertsen answered with an insurance tally – one that proved necessary for Columbia – with 3:35 to extend the lead back to 13-11. Fairfield's final push started when Horning scored again, this time finishing a feed from Connolly, to cut the deficit to 13-12 with 2:44 remaining. The Stags would regain possession with 1:40 to go but could not find the equalizer as time ticked away on a 13-12 decision in favor of the visiting Lions. The Stags strike out on a home game road swing this Saturday, Feb. 24, for a 3 p.m. opening draw at Hofstra (2-0). Fairfield will follow with visits to Sacred Heart, New Hampshire and Lehigh before returning home to Rafferty Stadium to host Boston University on Wednesday, March 14 at 3 p.m.
