Junior midfielder Callie Bonnel had a career day to lead the Radford lacrosse team's comeback effort that fell just short in an 11-14 loss at Columbia on Tuesday afternoon. Bonnel netted a career-high six goals to lead all scorers in the contest, surpassing her previous best of four goals which she achieved most recently on April 22, 2017 against Campbell. She opened the scoring for the Highlanders at the 23:59 mark of the first half, cutting Columbia's early lead down to 2-1. Junior attacker Juliette Ruland was the next to score for Radford, taking a pass from Emma Rogers and racing past her defender to find the back of the net. tally made it 3-2 in favor of Columbia, but the Lions would take over from there. Between 18:46 and 7:47 in the first half, Columbia scored six unanswered goals to build its lead to 9-2. Bonnel scored back-to-back goals to halt the Lions' run and sophomore attacker Colleen O'Connell added one more just before halftime to cut the deficit to 10-5 as each team headed into the locker room. A stout defensive effort by Columbia kept the Highlanders off the board for the first nine minutes of the second half until redshirt sophomore midfielder Brittany Rinaldi ended the scoreless streak with 21:00 left on the clock. Her goal began a 6-1 run for Radford that transformed the game from a 12-5 rout by Columbia to a 13-11 battle with less than a minute left in regulation. The hole created in the first half proved to be too large, however, and the Lions sealed their victory with one last goal late. After a shaky start, sophomore goalie Jenny Davis turned in another solid performance in the cage with 12 saves on 26 shots on goal. Columbia's goalie, Kelsey Gedin, was excellent with 13 saves and a .542 save percentage. While most statistical categories were relatively even for both sides, the Lions dominated on draw controls, winning 19 of 27 attempts. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE Both teams took 31 shots. Columbia got 26 on goal while Radford got 24 of its shots on target Columbia's ball movement resulted in nine assists on 14 goals Both teams were called for 20 fouls in another physical game Playing in her home state of New York, Rinaldi posted back-to-back games on two goals Earning her first start of the season, sophomore defender Shea Swingle led the Highlanders with six ground balls Freshman attacker Jennifer Shield now has two assists in only four career games Radford scored on three of four free position shots while Columbia capitalized on only one of their six FPS The Highlanders caused 13 of Columbia's 22 turnovers QUOTABLE "The ladies battled hard in this one, but unfortunately we didn't finish our shots well or come up with enough draws. Our attack unit has to get more involved in scoring to take some pressure off our middies. Callie Bonnel is an unstoppable competitor who plays her best against the best competition. Our team is on the verge of a break through, and I'm confident we will peak at the right time." - Head Coach Haley Marvine. UP NEXT The Highlanders return home to take on Butler this Saturday, March 10th at Noon It kicks off a six-game home stand in the month of March All games held at Cupp Stadium are free of admission
