Sophomore Alyssa Parrella scored a game-high five goals, sophomore Alexa Mattera had five points on four goals and one assist and junior goalie Maddie Fields posted nine saves in net to lead the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to a 17-8 rout of Columbia on Tuesday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium. Hofstra evens its record at 4-4 with the win, while Columbia falls to 3-6 with the loss. The Pride jumped out to a 3-1 advantage in the game as Parrella scored twice and was aided by Mattera in the opening 10:23 of the contest. Hofstra would still be ahead, 6-4, later in the half before the Pride took control with a half-closing 3-0 run to take a commanding 9-4 lead into the break. Hofstra got goals from three different players during the run as Parrella got it started and Mattera and senior Drew Shapiro made it a five-goal game. The run would continue to start the second stanza as the Pride scored the first three of the final 30 minutes to make it a 6-0 scoring run in total. Mattera and Shapiro were also part of the second half 3-0 run with sophomore Darcie Smith posting her first career goal to close the run and make it 12-4 with 24:46 left in regulation. Hofstra would take its largest lead of the game, 17-5, with just under 12 minutes left following five straight goals before Columbia closed the game with three consecutive goals to account for the final score. Shapiro finished with three points (2G, 1A), while junior Jenna Budd added three points on a goal and two assists. Smith had a game and career-high seven draw controls and added two ground balls, while Mattera was second on the team with a career-high six draw controls and had a pair of ground balls. Alexandria Absey had four points (3G, 1A) for Columbia, while Chelsea Witteck and Orna Madigan both tallied two goals for the Lions. Hofstra is back in action on Friday when it travels to Central Connecticut State for a 7 p.m. contest. NOTES - Hofstra improved to 3-0 all-time against Columbia. - Shapiro has scored at least one goal in every game this season, while Mattera has scored at least one goal in five straight games. - Shapiro and Fields tied for team-high honors with three ground balls. That total tied a career-high for Shapiro.
