The three-time defending champions got started on the right note Saturday as the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team pulled away from Drew in the second half to earn their first win of the season and the first coaching victory for interim head coach Kyle McGuire. The Blue Jays outscored the Rangers 8-2 in the second half en route to a 12-4 win. Brandon Sankey racked up a career high six points in the win with three goals and three assists. Elizabethtown (1-0, 1-0 Landmark) scored early and scored late in the first quarter to take a 2-0 lead into the second. Micah Ballew opened his scoring account for the 2021 season with his first of the year less than three minutes into Saturday's battle with the Rangers. Sankey recorded the assist on Ballew's goal. Nick Cost found Cameron Goodling late in the first with ten seconds to go to make it 2-0. Jack Tynan went the full field a man down in the opening minutes of the second to get Drew (0-1, 0-1 Landmark) back within a goal. Sankey answered with his first of the game moments later on the first career assist for Connor Stewart. Gavin Gismondi tallied the first of his career with 3:26 left in the half on a feed from Owen Yake. Michael Phillips scored late in the half, with 44 seconds left before halftime, to cut the Rangers' deficit to two. Etown led 4-2 at the break. Phillips scored a man up midway through the third quarter in response to Cost's goal in the first two minutes. Alex Kilgour netted the first of his Blue Jay career with 5:04 left in the third that doubled the lead to 6-3. After David Burke's goal with 4:47 left in the third period, Elizabethtown shut the door on Drew, who did not score the rest of the way. Grady Meredith closed out the third with a goal thanks to Sankey's second assist of the game. Etown led 7-4 after three. Sankey (2), Cost, Mike Scrafano, and Goodling all registered goals in the fourth quarter as the Blue Jays pulled away. Goodling, Ballew, Sankey, and Scrafano added fourth-quarter assists and as an offense, Elizabethtown had nine assists on their 12 goals. Sankey (6), Cost (3), Goodling (3), Ballew (2), and Scrafano (2) all had multi-point games for the Jays. Danny Gilbert was tremendous in establishing possession for Elizabethtown, winning 15 of 20 faceoffs. Gilbert had a team-best 8 ground balls. Tom Mahoney needed only seven saves over 60 minutes to get the win. The Blue Jays will host Catholic on Wednesday, April 7, at 4 p.m. on Wolf Field.
