Dartmouth scored the game's first five goals and never looked back, cruising to a 19-10 victory over the Cornell women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. The 17th-ranked Big Green improved to 8-3 (4-1 Ivy) with the win, while the Big Red slipped to 6-6 (2-3 Ivy) with the Senior Day loss. Caroline Allen scored three goals for the Big Red, while Sarah Phillips (three assists) and Joey Coffy (two goals, one assist) each had three points as well. Coffy added a single-game school record 10 draw controls, along with a career-high four caused turnovers and three ground balls. The Big Red held a 37-32 advantage in shots, a 17-14 lead in draw controls and a 14-11 edge in ground balls, but converted just 4-of-14 free-position shots in the game. A large reason for that was the play of Big Red goalkeeper Kiera Vrindten and her 14 saves. She also triggered a transition game that was a perfect 22-of-22 on clears. Ellie Carson had five goals and both Katie Bourque and Kierra Sweeney netted four goals each. The visitors were a near-perfect 6-of-7 when shooting from the free position and scored on 19 of the team's 32 shots. With Dartmouth holding on to a 10-2 lead with over five minutes in the half left, the Big Red showed some life, notching the final two goals of the first and laying claim to the first score of the second to close the gap, 10-5. However, Dartmouth ultimately outscored the home team 9-6 to fend off any momentum Cornell had going. Along with the Big Green, the Big Red was also perfect on clears (18-18) and was clean with the ball, tallying only eight turnovers on the day when previously averaging 14.82 per game. Out of Allen's trio of scores, one came from the free position to move her up to second all-time in free position goals in a season. The sophomore now has 14 this year and only trails Cari Hills, who had 17 in 1998. Following Coffy's dominant draw control performance, the senior jumped to No. 5 in school history in draw controls in a career (104). She is tied with Margaux Viola in that honor. The senior is now tied for second in Cornell's single-season draw control record with 51 along with Caroline Salisbury (2013). Sarah Hefner (2014) holds the No. 1 spot with 68. The Cornell goal saw all three goalkeepers earning minutes with junior Samantha Nielsen leading the way with 34:25 of action, three saves and one ground ball. Sophomore Katie McGahan had one save in her time on the field and freshman Hailey Andress got in the cage as well. The team has a short turnaround, facing its last nonconference opponent of the season on Tuesday. Regional rival Binghamton is on tap with a 4 p.m. start time.
