Things went pretty well at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium for the 11th-ranked Northwestern lacrosse program Sunday afternoon. A day after 12 Wildcats scored in the season-opening win over Canisius, Chicago's Big Ten Team saw 13 'Cats find the back of the net in a dominant victory over Detroit Mercy, 21-2. Junior Selena Lasota scored four goals and dished out three assists and five players finished with at least two goals, including first-year attack Brianna Stroup who recorded her first career hat trick. Senior Danita Stroup, first-year Taylor Pinzone and junior Emily Stein each scored a pair of goals as well. The Wildcats (2-0) finished the contest with 13 assists and have now assisted on 22 of their 39 goals through the first two games. The 'Cats' 13 assists were the most in a game since they dished out 14 versus Georgetown on March 5, 2011. Senior Nicole Beardsley matched her career high with a pair of assists while eight others had one assist each. It took Northwestern nearly four minutes to get on the board, but once they did they rolled through the Titans. Stein opened the scoring at the 26:32 mark and Lasota needed just 19 seconds after winning the ensuing draw control to extend the lead to 2-0. The 'Cats had a 6-0 lead on Pinzone's second goal of the game with 21:02 left in the first half and the running clock was turned on at the 15:11 mark after sophomore Meghan Duffy found senior Sheila Nesselbush streaking in front of the net for the commanding 10-0 lead. Stein scored her second goal of the contest on an assist from junior Leighton Yenor to notch her second-straight multi-goal game and the younger Stroup scored her first career goal with just under 10 minutes remaining on an assist from her fellow Canadian teammate Megan Kinna. Lasota scored two more goals before the end of the first half and assisted on Beardsley's first of the game to give the 'Cats a 15-0 lead at the break. The home team took advantage of a woman-up situation early in the second half when the elder Stroup scored her second of the game on an assist from the elder Nesselbush and Lasota scored her fourth and final goal of the contest with 22:09 remaining to extend the lead to 17-0. Detroit finally got on the board with 15:54 to go, but the 'Cats responded with 4-0 run behind a pair of goals from Brianna Stroup, a tally by Yenor and the first career goal from sophomore Sara Szynal to extend the lead to 21-1. Northwestern dominated possession thanks in large part to a 19-6 advantage in the draw circle and by forcing the Titans into 23 turnovers. Lasota led the way with four draw controls, while first year Brennan Dwyer had three. First-year Megan Gordon, junior Kim Harker, junior Claire Quinn and senior Lindsey Darrell each had a team-high two caused turnovers. The 'Cats also held a 23-14 advantage in ground balls, with Brianna Stroup leading all 'Cats with three. Six other Wildcats had at least two in the contest. Redshirt first-year Julie Krupnick and junior Mallory Weisse split time in the cage for the second-straight game. Krupnick faced just one shot and made a save in the first half to earn the win, while Weisse made a pair of saves in the second half. Northwestern will play its first ranked opponent of the season on Thursday when it plays host to No. 16 Colorado at 2 p.m. The Wildcats then hit the road for the first time when they travel to No. 19 Duke next Sunday.
