The ninth-ranked Northwestern lacrosse team had No. 4 North Carolina up against the ropes, delivering blow after blow Saturday afternoon at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium, and just like that the Tar Heels countered to pull away in a back-and-forth affair to hand the Wildcats their third loss of the season, 18-13. The Wildcats (5-3) used a 3-0 run to end the first half to take their first lead of the game, 8-7, but the Tar Heels (6-2) responded by outscoring Chicago's Big Ten Team in the second half, 11-5. Junior Claire Quinn tied her career high with four goals and junior Selena Lasota also had scored four for the 'Cats. Senior Nicole Beardsley recorded her second-straight multi-goal game with a pair of scores and classmate Shelby Fredericks led the way with two assists and 10 draw controls. Fredericks has reached double-digit draws in each of the last three games and with her 10 Saturday, became just the second player in program history (Alyssa Leonard; 2011-14) to reach 400 career draw controls With two free-position goals in the contest, Lasota moved past Hilary Bowen (33; 2006-09) into third in program history with 34 goals from the 8-meter line. The Tar Heels struck first Saturday and held the lead for the majority of the first half, twice leading by a pair of goals, 3-1 and 7-5. Northwestern wasn't deterred however, converting six of its seven free-position opportunities in the first half to claim the lead. After UNC took a 7-5 lead with 2:51 to play in the first half, Quinn scored her second of the game on a free-position and sophomore Megan Kinna found Beardsley just 24 seconds later to even the game, 7-7. Quinn completed her hat trick with 17 seconds left in the first half to give the 'Cats the lead at the break, 8-7. UNC tied things up just over two minutes into the second half resulting in a ping-pong back-and-forth match of sorts for the next 10 minutes. NU reclaimed the lead on a goal by junior Kim Harker and the two teams exchanged goals until it was tied 11-11 with 21:51 to play. Quinn's fourth goal gave the Wildcats their last lead of the game, 11-10. The Tar Heels reeled off a 3-0 run after Quinn's fourth of the contest, but Fredericks found Lasota with a pass from the restraining line just in front of the net to cut the deficit to one, 13-12. Unfortunately, it was the 'Cats' last goal for a span of over 15 minutes until Lasota scored with just seven second left to end the Tar Heels' second 3-0 run of the second half. The Wildcats finished 7-for-11 on free-position shots in the game and held an 18-15 advantage in draw controls. Redshirt first-year goalkeeper Julie Krupnick made a season-high 12 saves in the effort. Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action next Friday when it opens Big Ten play versus Michigan at Martin Stadium. The game will be broadcast to a national television audience on the Big Ten Network and is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
