No. 7 Northwestern outscored No. 3 Maryland by three goals in the second half, but a seven-goal deficit at halftime was too much to overcome as the Wildcats saw their eight-game winning streak come an end Thursday night, 20-16. Junior goalkeeper Mallory Weisse made a season-high 12 saves and allowed just five goals in 27:25 of action during the second half, while first-year midfielder Brennan Dwyer won a season-high 10 draw controls to help the Wildcats (13-4, 5-1 Big Ten) mount the comeback in the second half. Senior Sheila Nesselbush extended her career-long point streak to 12 games with three goals and an assist, while sophomores Lindsey McKone and Megan Kinna each had a hat trick. The Wildcats (13-4) fell behind 4-0 early and trailed by as many as eight early in the second half, 15-7, before garnering momentum to attempt the comeback. Junior Selena Lasota sparked a 4-0 run at the 28:37 mark of the second half before Nesselbush capped a hat trick, McKone scored on an assist from senior Shelby Fredericks to force a Terps timeout. Dwyer won her fourth-straight draw control out of the timeout and McKone scored her second-straight goal to cut the deficit to four with 22:35 to go. The Terrapins (16-1, 6-0 Big Ten) responded by four of the next five to push their lead back to seven, 19-12, with 9:32 to go, but the 'Cats had one more run in them. McKone capped off her first career hat trick with 7:08 to play, junior Claire Quinn scored her first of the game and sophomore Megan Kinna matched her career high with her third goal of the contest to cut the deficit to five, 20-15. Chicago's Big Ten Team had a chance to cut it four with just over two minutes remaining, but Nesselbush's free-position attempt hit the post. Senior Nicole Beardsley scored her second goal of the game with 33 seconds left, but time ran out on the 'Cats as they fell just short of a Big Ten regular season title. Senior Selena Lasota scored a pair of goals in the loss, moving into a tie with Hannah Nielsen (2006-09) for eighth in program history with 174 career goals. Northwestern will be the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament next week in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and will take on No. 3 seed Penn State. The Terrapins secured the Big Ten regular season title and the No. 1 seed with their victory Thursday night. The fourth and final seed will be determined when Johns Hopkins and Rutgers battle Saturday with the winner earning a chance to take on Maryland in the semifinals.
