Baker Earl scored five goals to lead Holy Cross to a 14-8 win over Stetson, Sunday at the Athletic Training Center. The Crusaders (1-5) out-shot the Hatters, 42-21, as they kept Stetson (0-4) from its first victory of the season. After Earl scored the game's first goal, the Hatters netted three of the next four as Shelby Lehmann, Riley Reagan and Quinn Roe each found the back of the net. But the Hatters couldn't maintain their 3-2 lead as Holy Cross took control by scoring four of the next five goals. With the Crusaders leading 6-4, Stetson's Hallie Merz scored the first of her two goals to make it 6-5 but Holy Cross closed the half by scoring the next three goals and led 9-5 at halftime after out-shooting the Hatters, 24-10. Rachel Valocchi, Merz and Marian Rotella each scored goals in the second half but the Hatters never got any closer 9-6. Holy Cross forced Stetson into 29 turnovers, but the Hatters were better on the draw by a 13-11 count. Stetson goalie Liza Diamond turned in another fine performance with 18 saves and a school-record 14 ground balls. Merz led Stetson with a pair of goals, and added three saves. Sandra Stephan had a game-high four draw controls. The Hatters return to action when they visit Wagner, 1 p.m., Wednesday.
