FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College men's lacrosse team halted a comeback bid by Messiah University as Bentley LeBarron's goal with 4.6 seconds left sealed a 10-8 Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth win over the Falcons. Inside the Box Score LeBarron led the Blazer offense with three goals and two assists. Will Sweeney and Cody Upman chipped in with two goals apiece. Michael Mullen scooped up six ground balls. Garrett Hitchens won 12-of-21 faceoffs and added five ground balls. Trenton Lazorchak made 16 saves. Notes It was the first win in program history for Hood (1-1, 1-0) against Messiah (1-3, 0-1). How it Happened After carrying a 7-3 lead into halftime, goals by LeBarron and Aidan Gilsdorf stretched the lead to six with 13:00 minutes to go in the third period. Messiah tightened up the defense and embarked on a 5-0 run over the next 27:55. Colin Webb scored two of the five goals, but it was a score by Lucas Honebrink that pulled the Falcons within 9-8 with 11:11 to play in the game. The Hood defense answered the challenge from there and did not allow another goal. With 1:38 to go a shot by Seth Libby was saved by Lazorchak. Hood advanced the ball into its offensive third and called timeout with 27 seconds left. Off of the restart, LeBarron outran the Falcon defense to burn some clock before firing in the game-sealing goal. In the first quarter, Hood scored two early goals, one apiece by Mullen and Upman, for a 2-0 lead less than five minutes in. The two teams traded goals over the remainder of the quarter with the Blazers claiming a 4-2 lead. Upman made it a three-goal margin 42 seconds into the second quarter and after Sam Stone scored for the Falcons, goals by LeBarron and Sweeney down the stretch made it 7-3 at the break. Analysis Messiah held a slim 35-34 advantage in shots. Hood won the ground ball battle 38-26. For the opposition Owen Joyce had two goals and two assists for the Falcons, while Webb finished with two scores. Honebrink tallied six ground balls. Jacob Fahnestock stopped 11 shots in net.
