Navy women’s lacrosse head coach Cindy Timchal recorded her 500th career victory on Saturday afternoon as the Midshipmen (9-2, 4-0 Patriot League) posted a 19-7 victory over Holy Cross (4-8, 2-2 PL) at Kuzniewski Field in Worcester, Mass. Timchal has amassed 164 wins at Navy in her 11 seasons with the Midshipmen. She began her head coaching career by tallying 76 victories in nine seasons at Northwestern University before winning eight national championships and totaling 260 wins in 16 years at the University of Maryland. “Five hundred wins are the players; all the losses are the coach,” Timchal said after her historic win. “I am very grateful to be in a position to be coaching and achieve this milestone victory. It goes without saying that it is the players that compete hard on the field. Pleased with this victory for our team and happy that it was 500. Now we can move on to just getting ready for our next game. I credit the great players and great staff that we have for putting it all together to get to such a milestone in my head coaching career.” Offensively, seven different Midshipmen scored on the day with Jenna Collins (Clarksville, Md.), Julia Collins (Clarksville, Md.), and Meg O’Donnell (Forest Hill, Md.) leading the charge with four goals apiece. Kelly Larkin (Alexandria, Va.) led the team in points with seven, netting a pair of goals and boasting a team-high five assists. Andie O’Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) added five points (2g 3a), while Kayla Harris (Annapolis, Md.) and Molly O’Sullivan (Centreville, Va.) combined for three goals on the day. Defensively, Ingrid Boyum (Herndon, Va.) picked up her ninth win of the season. The senior recorded 53-minutes between the pipes, surrendering seven goals and notching four saves. She gave way to Gab Harchelroad (Pittsburgh, Pa.) who recorded a clean stat sheet in nearly seven minutes of action. The Midshipmen caused 16 of the Crusaders’ 25 turnovers. The 16 caused turnovers are tied for fifth most in a game by the Mids. Marie Valenti (Bechtelsville, Pa.) tied the Navy school record with six caused turnovers in a game, tying Caitlin Mandrin Hill (2008-11) who had six CT against Detroit Mercy in 2009. Boyum, who tied for the school record for most ground balls in a game with seven, and Valenti (5) combined for 12 of the Midshipmen’s 25 ground balls in the game. The two teams were tied 3-3 early in the first half before Navy took control of the game with a 9-0 run to take a 12-3 advantage. O’Donnell opened the run with a goal off of an Andie O’Sullivan assists. Harris followed with her second goal of the game with a helper from Jenna Collins, who converted a free-position opportunity for the third goal of the run. Larkin and O’Donnell netted back-to-back unassisted goals to extend the lead to 8-3 with just under 11 minutes to play in the half. Larkin notched assists on the three of the next four goals, finding Jenna Collins and Andie O’Sullivan for a pair of goals before Julia Collins scored an unassisted goal. Larkins’ helper to Jenna Collins ended the run and put the Mids up nine with 5:21 to play in the first half. Holy Cross scored two goals before the end of the half to go into intermission with the Mids up 12-5. In the second half, The Midshipmen went on the offensive once again scoring three quick goals to begin a running clock. Julia Collins scored three straight goals with two assists from Andie O’Sullivan to go up 15-5. O’Donnell and Andie O’Sullivan continued the 5-0 run to start the half with goals before Holy Cross scored one of its two goals of the half. Molly O’Sullivan scored her seventh goal of the season off a Larkin assist, while O’Donnell found the back of the net one final time with the help of a Molly O’Sullivan pass with 11:08 to play. The two teams combined for just one goal in the final 11 minutes with Holy Cross providing the final score with a goal to make the game 19-7. Navy returns home on Saturday, April 7, as the Midshipmen play host to No. 7 Loyola (Md.) in a first-place Patriot League showdown. Opening draw against the Greyhounds is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
