The Kenyon College lacrosse team cruised to a 15-8 North Coast Athletic Conference win in their home opener against The College of Wooster at the Field at Benson Bowl on Tuesday. The Lords looked sharp from the get-go, never trailing in the contest in which both their defense and offense turned in impressive performances. The win moved Kenyon to 2-0 on the season. Kenyon got off to a quick start with a goal by Weston Powell less than a minute into the contest. Assisted by Ollie Martin, that goal set the tone early. After a man-up goal by Wooster tied things up, Keyon struck back immediately when a Joe Boessel shot found the back of the net. An additional score by Declan Curry put the Lords up 3-1 at the end of the first quarter. The scoring opened up early in the second quarter, as the Fighting Scots scored a quick man-up goal. It took only eight seconds for the Lords to respond, with Reed Russell's faceoff win leading to a quick goal for Powell, his second of the day. While Wooster narrowed the score to 4-3 with another goal, Kenyon recovered when Ethan Dewbrey caught fire, scoring a man-up goal assisted by Mike Matteo with 6:42 left in the quarter, and then adding another score about a minute later. Matteo and Boessel also chipped in goals to complete the Lords five-goal barrage during the quarter and giving Kenyon a commanding 8-3 lead at half time. Kenyon started the second half much like they ended the first: with another Boessel goal. However, the third quarter saw the momentum shift back towards Wooster, largely due to the heroics of Ben Byars, who scored three times. Fouls hurt Kenyon, as two of those goals came during man-up opportunities. The Lords were outscored 3-2 in the quarter but still managed to hold a commanding four-goal lead heading into the final frame. Any hopes that the Fighting Scots had of a comeback were quashed by a dominant fourth-quarter showing from the Lords. Curry, operating as the fulcrum of the Kenyon offense, got things started when he dished out his second assist of the contest to Boesel, who scored yet again for his fifth goal just minutes later. Powell scored two more goals for Kenyon in the quarter, bringing his total to four to pair with two assists. Finn Murray poured in yet another goal for the Lords, their fifth of the quarter, to put the game out of reach. Wooster tallied two goals near the end of the quarter but it was too little too late for the Fighting Scots as they fell 15-8. One of the biggest keys to Kenyon's win was their success in face-offs. Winning 19 out of 25, including 18 by Russell, gave the Lords a major advantage in possessions that they used to convert into easy offense. The defense also was a big factor in the Lords' win, causing seven turnovers and winning the ground ball battle 36-18. Behind the success of the Lords' stingy defense was goalie David Metzger, who made 16 saves. In many ways Metzger's play was what decided this game; though the Lords outshot the Fighting Scots 46-42, both teams took 24 shots on goal. Next up for Kenyon is a rematch with Wooster, who will host the Lords this Saturday April 17 at 2 p.m.
