Moon Township, Pa. (March 23, 2019) – Mount St. Mary's erased a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to come from behind and knock off reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) Champion Robert Morris by a 14-11 margin on Saturday at Joe Walton Stadium. The win pushed the Mountaineers to 5-5 overall this season and a perfect 2-0 in league play, as they sit in a tie atop the conference standings. Chris DiPretoro (3g), Brendan Doyle (2g, 1a) and Jared McMahon (2g, 1a) led the Mountaineers on the day with three points apiece. Joe Bethke (2g), Luke Frankeny (2g), Matt Haggerty (1g, 1a), Jake Krieger (1g, 1a) and Jack Mangan (2a) all tallied two points, as the Mountaineers had eight players finish with multi-point efforts. Face-off specialist Sam Stephan had one of his best games of the season, winning 17-of-27 face-offs while picking up 11 ground balls. In goal, Dylan Furnback stopped nine shots to earn his fifth victory of the season. Robert Morris (1-7, 0-2 NEC) opened the scoring on a tally from Brad McCulley, but the Mount responded with the next three goals as Jared McMahon, Krieger and Doyle each found the back of the net to make it 3-1 Mountaineers at the 6:13 mark. The Mount got two of the final three goals in the opening quarter, coming from Bethke and DiPretoro, and carried a 5-2 advantage into the second frame. Back-to-back tallies from DiPretoro and Doyle in the opening three minutes of the second quarter gave the Mountainers their largest lead of the game at 7-2. Matt Schmidt and Frankeny traded goals later in the period before RMU closed out the half with the final three scores to cut the Mount lead to 8-6 heading into the break. RMU controlled play in the third quarter, outscoring the Mount by a 5-0 margin while holding the Mountaineers to just five shots in the period. The Colonials tied things up with 12:13 on the clock on Ryan Smith's man-up goal, and took their first lead since the opening goal of the game on Austin Popovich's tally at the 11:01 mark. RMU registered a pair of goals in the final five and a half minutes of the quarter to take an 11-8 advantage into the fourth. The Mount showed its toughness with a dominating fourth quarter that proved to be the difference in the game. Jared McMahon's second goal of the contest brought the Mount within two early in the frame, and DiPretoro netted his third to cut the deficit to 11-10 with 7:39 remaining. Minutes later, Mangan found Bethke for the game-tying score with 5:28 left on a man-up opportunity. Just over 30 seconds after the game-tying goal, Haggerty put the Mountaineers back on top, 12-11, with his first goal of the tilt. Brenden McCarthy pushed the Mount lead to a pair with a score with 3:26 on the clock, and Frankeny added another insurance goal in the final minute as the Mountaineers came away with the 14-11 comeback victory. The Mount outshot RMU 47-36 in the game and held a 36-28 advantage on ground balls. Mount St. Mary's is back in action for a home game against Sacred Heart on Saturday, March 30 at 12 p.m.
