Nico Lorenzo (Howell, NJ/Howell) found the back of the net five times, including with just over five minutes remaining in the game that proved to be the game-winner as the Wilkes University men's lacrosse team defeated Lebanon Valley College 11-10 in non-conference action from Schmidt Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Colonels improved to 4-7 while the Flying Dutchmen fell to 5-6. Lebanon Valley jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Luke Palladino (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) got Wilkes on the board with an assist from Ethan Weaver (Olney, MD/James Hubert Blake). Lorenzo tied the score with 11 minutes left in the first quarter on a man-up score assisted by Weaver. The Flying Dutchmen retook the lead with 8:05 on the clock before Alex Myers (Cortland, NY/Cortland) scored unassisted and Weaver scored from Lorenzo to give the Colonels their first lead at 4-3 with 4:28 left in the first. Lebanon Valley tied the score with 40 seconds on the clock but Wilkes finished the first quarter with the lead when Lorenzo scored with an assist from Colby Opromolla (Patterson, NY/Carmel) as the Colonels led 5-4 heading into the second. Wilkes pushed its lead to 7-4 when Lorenzo scored from Opromolla, Weaver scored from Palladino, and Lorenzo and Weaver teamed up. The Flying Dutchmen cut the run with a goal at 2:22 in the second to finish the scoring as the Colonels entered halftime leading 7-5. Palladino and Lorenzo scored to push Wilkes' lead to 9-5 with 7:54 on the clock before Lebanon Valley closed the third and opened the fourth on a four-goal run to tie the score at nine with 8:55 left in the game. Opromolla broke the tie with an assist from Palladino with 6:31 on the clock before Lorenzo notched his fifth score of the game, which proved to be the game-winner as the Flying Dutchmen scored with 59 second left in the fourth. A Lebanon Valley technical penalty for pushing with 40 seconds left sealed the win as Wilkes played keep-away as time expired. Ryan Lasher (Warrenton, VA/Liberty) earned the win, playing the final 30 minutes making nine saves. Daniel Cox (Stratford, CT/Stratford) started the game, making eight saves over the first two quarters. The Colonels were led by Lorenzo's five goals and one assist for six points. Weaver finished with five points on two goals and three assists while Palladino finished with two goals and two assists for four points. Wilkes wraps up the regular season with a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) contest against Misericordia starting at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Schmidt Stadium.
