Luke Koferl and Justin Westbrook led the Vikings offensively in their first victory of the season in a Sunday afternoon matchup against Virginia Wesleyan. The Vikings finished 17-7 over the Marlins, handing them their first loss on the season. HOW IT HAPPENED: Berry came out strong offensively, with a goal by Chris Berchock off the stick of Koferl in the first two minutes of play. Virginia Wesleyan’s Jason Thibeault responded with a goal of his own to bring the score to 1-1, which began a back and forth offensive battle in the first quarter. After two more goals on both sides of the field, Berry made defensive adjustments to hold the Marlins to a scoreless second quarter. Matthew Tatum, Andrew Elgin and Berchock all found the net off of assists by Westbrook to bring the score to 6-3 as the Vikings went into the locker room. The Viking’s second-half offensive campaign secured the victory for the Vikings. Berry’s defense allowed only one goal in the third quarter, fired off by Andrew Johnson, while the offense picked up five goals of their own. Westbook, Koferl, Tatum, and Elgin all scored for the Vikings. Virginia Wesleyan stepped up in the fourth quarter, scoring three goals, but the Vikings responded with four goals of their own. Westbrook, Koferl, Tatum and Berchock each added a goal in the fourth quarter. Riley Brogdon took the win in the goal, recording 12 saves on 19 shots. Josh Baker won 22-27 face-offs for the Vikings.
