The Lehigh women's lacrosse team played neck-and-neck with two-time defending Final Four team Penn State, but it wasn't enough as the Mountain Hawks fell, 14-13 on Saturday afternoon. It appeared as if junior Kellie Gough had evened the score in the final minute, but the officials waved off the goal due to a dangerous follow through. The Mountain Hawks were led offensively by junior Courtney Henig, who tied a career-high seven points behind three goals and four assists. "Overall, I'm really proud of our effort, but we're disappointed not to get the win," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "We're at the point now in our program and with this team where we expect to play with a Penn State. We were prepared and had a great game plan. Our coaching staff did a great job. We just came up a little bit short." Gough added four points behind three goals and an assist while graduate student Julianne D'Orazio tallied two goals and an assist. Junior Alexis King led the defense with two caused turnovers while freshman goalkeeper Samantha Sagi was sensational, making 16 saves, including a number of point-blank stops to help set the stage for the Mountain Hawks' late comeback attempt. Junior Sondra Dickey (5), senior Kayleen Kelly (4) and junior Olivia Kelly (4) combined for 13 draw controls. Gough scored Lehigh's first two goals, but Penn State netted three in between to help the Nittany Lions take an early lead. Gough's second goal sparked a 4-1 Lehigh run, capped off by two straight from Henig to give the Mountain Hawks a 5-4 advantage with 12:27 left in the first half. 2/17/2018 Women's Lacrosse vs Penn State Women's Lacrosse vs Penn State The teams went back and forth trading leads. A 3-0 Mountain Hawks' surge later in the half, capped off by a Mary Ellen Carron goal, gave Lehigh a 9-7 advantage with 5:08 on the clock. However, Penn State scored the final three first-half goals to take a 10-9 halftime advantage. Penn State scored the first two second-half goals to open a three-goal lead, which stood until 9:29 remaining. That's when Henig scored her third goal of the game to pull her side within 13-11. After a PSU goal, the Mountain Hawks got goals from sophomores Dickey and Autumn Ryan with 2:32 and 1:32 remaining, respectively. Lehigh won the ensuing draw and had a chance to tie, Gough's shot found the back of the net with 34 seconds remaining, but was waved off and the Nittany Lions held on. "Our offense scored in multiple ways," said Redfern. "Our inside game was particularly good and our finishing was good. It's not an easy team to score goals against. It was really a great team effort across the field, both units. So many contributions from different places. Great teammates working really hard for each other." Final shots were even at 36 while the Mountain Hawks held an 18-12 edge in groundballs. PSU led in draw controls, 15-14. Sagi's 16 saves came across Penn State keeper Madi Cunningham, who tallied 14. "It was a terrific game for Sam," said Redfern. "She's capable of playing at that level. She's going to be a difference maker for us. Her first time seeing Penn State level shots, she did a great job. She had some momentum-changing saves, which we really capitalized on."
