Freshman Sophia Triandafils (Wading River, N.Y.) scored a career-high four goals to help lead No. 12 Penn State past Duquesne, 19-8, in non-conference action this afternoon from the newly minted Panzer Stadium. Sophomore Katie Schluederberg (Elkridge, Md.) added a career-high six points on a pair of goals and four assists to lead all scorers while seniors Katie O’Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) and Maggie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) and sophomores Kristin Roberto (Miller Place, N.Y.), Maria Auth (Street, Md.) and Shannon Moore (West Chester, Pa.) each added multi-goal efforts for the hosts. On defense junior Kelly Daggett (Bainbridge, Pa.) caused a career and game-high three turnovers to lead a defensive unit that caused a season-high 16 miscues in the game. Sophomore Madison Cunningham (Davie, Fla.) earned her second consecutive victory in net to run her record to 2-0 after collecting five saves during the first half before being relieved by freshman Lucy Lowe (Cockeysville, Md.) who stopped three shots over the final 30 minutes of action. Penn State (2-1) raced to the early 6-0 advantage midway through the opening half as O’Donnell potted the first two goals before Triandafils ran off a natural hat-trick and Auth closed the run at 15:43. Duquesne (0-2) responded scoring three of the next four goals to cut the lead to 7-3 at the 12:43 mark of the first half, but the Nittany Lions answered with a mini 4-0 spurt capped off by Schluederberg’s first career goal making the score 11-3 at the 9:35 mark. The Dukes scored back-to-back tallies in just 86 seconds to cut the deficit to 11-5 with four minutes to play in the opening half, but goals from senior Bridget Chakey (Havertown, Pa.) and Schluederberg at 3:14 and 10 seconds, respectively, gave Penn State the 13-5 advantage heading into the intermission. Coming out of the break Gallagher notched her first of the season just 35 ticks in and Moore hit running time with her score just 40 seconds later before Gallagher again tickled the twine at 26:45 capping off a 5-0 run for the Nittany Lions. The lead never dipped back below ten for the duration of the second half and despite a Duquesne goal with under a minute remaining, Penn State secured the 19-8 victory. Penn State returns to action this weekend as they host Cornell for a 3 p.m. affair on Saturday afternoon. NOTES Penn State held the commanding 34-19 edge in shots and the 27-16 margin in shots on target. The Dukes held the slim edge in ground balls (14-13) and draw controls (15-14), but were just 8-for-14 on clear attempts while Penn State went 16-for-18 on the clear. Duquesne also turned the ball over 18 times compared to just 10 for the Nittany Lions and was unable to convert on four free-position shots. PSU went 4-for-6 on the free-position. With a pair of goals O’Donnell now moves into a tie with Maggie Dunphy ’86) for seventh on the Penn State all-time goals list.
