Calvin remained unbeaten on the young season with a 10-7 victory at Heidelberg University Wednesday night. Calvin (2-0) used a strong second half to pull away for the win. With the teams locked in a 4-4 tie at halftime, Calvin outscored the Student Princes (1-1) 3-1 in the third quarter to build a 7-5 lead. Heidelberg scored the opening goal of the third quarter but senior Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) sandwiched a pair of goals around a tally by junior Noah Boelens (Round Lake, Il./Grayslake Central HS). Chase Sparling opened the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal four minutes into the fourth quarter. Senior Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) added an unassisted goal with 4:27 remaining that lifted the Knights into a 9-5 lead. Junior Nathan Jindra (South Bend, Ind./John Adams HS) scored with 10:52 remaining to give the Knights a 10-5 advantage. Heidelberg scored a pair of goals in the final 26 seconds to narrow the final margin of victory. Chase Sparling had a huge game with four goals, two ground balls and a caused turnover while winning 10 of 20 faceoff opportunities. Griffin Sparling had a goal and three assists. Senior Nick Pitre (Jacksonville, Fla./Providence HS) scooped up five ground balls. Sophomore Evan Griffin (Howell, Mich./Hartland HS) came up with five saves in goal. COACHES COMMENT: "The guys played in very tough conditions tonight and did a great job overcoming adversity," said Calvin men's lacrosse head coach Dave Hoger. "The team rallied around each other in the second half and played great team lacrosse. It was fun to see and we're ready to get back to work." NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Benedictine University (Il.) on March 3 for an 8 p.m. (EST) game.
