Senior Katie O’Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) tied her career-high with six goals, but it wasn’t enough as No. 17 Penn State dropped a, 13-8, contest to No. 3 Maryland in Big Ten action this evening from the FH & Lacrosse Complex. Maryland improves to 15-1 on the year and 5-0 in the Big Ten with the victory while the Nittany Lions fall to 9-6 overall and 3-2 in conference action. The Terrapins opened the scoring with back-to-back goals in just 62 seconds to take the lead before O’Donnell ripped home a free-position attempt for the 2-1 score at the 25:41 mark of the first half. O’Donnell then added her second of the game as she cut to the middle and picked the right corner for the 2-2 tie at the 18:27 mark. Maryland responded with a pair of goals in just 44 seconds from Grace Griffin and Caroline Steele to take the 4-2 lead at the 16:29 mark. The score stayed that way for more than 10 minutes before senior Maggie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) showed off her moves spinning into the 8-meter and ripping a bounce shot past Terrapin goalkeeper Megan Taylor for the 4-3 deficit at the 5:08 mark. Maryland fought back as Megan Whittle scored the final goal of the first half with just 28 seconds left and ripped home a man-down score to open the second half giving the Terps the 6-3 advantage at the 26:11 mark. The hosts kept the pressure on and after back-to-back goals from Whittle just 1:19 apart, the Terps had scored five in-a-row and took the 9-3 lead at the 13:49 mark of the second half. O’Donnell ended the Terp run with her third goal of the game at the 13:20 mark, but Maryland came right back with two in-a-row before O’Donnell again beat Taylor igniting a 4-0 Nittany Lion run over the next 1:37 to cut the deficit to 11-8 after the senior scored her sixth of the game at the 5:16 mark. Whittle ended the run and the Penn State chances as she fired home her fifth of the game at the 3:47 mark followed by a score from Taylor Hensh with just 58.9 seconds remaining for the 13-8 final. Freshman Lucy Lowe (Cockeysville, Md.) falls to 7-6 on the season after collecting 10 saves while Taylor improves to 14-1 after stopping eight shots. Penn State remains on the road as they travel to No. 1 Stony Brook for a 4 p.m. contest next Tuesday afternoon. NOTES Penn State has now lost 13-straight against Maryland as the Terrapins improve to 40-14-1 in the all-time series. The Nittany Lions were outshot 36-27 for the game including the 23-16 mark on target. The Terps also held the 15-11 advantage in groundballs and the 14-9 edge in draw controls. O’Donnell extends her goal-streak to 38-straight games and has now scored three or more goals in seven-straight while scoring multiple goals in 21 of her last 22 games. The senior also passed Steph Lazo ’17 moving into a tie with Laurie Gray ’84 for sixth on the Penn State all-time points list with 216. O’Donnell is now only seven goals away from becoming just the fourth player in program history to reach the 200-goal mark as she currently stands at 193. Junior Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.), sophomore Maria Auth (Street, Md.) and freshman Quinn Nicolai (Moorestown, N.J.) each see their goal streaks come to a close at 17, 17 and eight games, respectively. Freshman Rachel Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) also has her three-game point-streak snapped.
