Maggie Kane's goal as time expired sent Michigan into a frenzy as the Wolverines came back from multiple deficits to defeat 17th-ranked Penn State by a score of 12-11 on Saturday (April 28). Michigan, which trailed 6-0 early in the game, finally pulled even with 2:27 to play on a goal from Lilly Grass to make it a 10-10 game. Following that goal, Michigan controlled the draw but came up empty on the offensive end, giving PSU possession with 50 seconds remaining in regulation. PSU's Madison Carter cut to the middle, accepted a pass and dropped a low shot while falling to the ground for an 11-10 lead with 28 seconds to go. Michigan was deflated as the Wolverines were whistled for a foul after the goal that allowed PSU to retain possession. U-M was relentless on defense with Garrett forcing an unlikely turnover at midfield with 10 seconds left. Garrett picked up the ground ball and headed straight to the cage before feeding sophomore Catherine Granito on the left side of the attack. Granito launched a shot to the near post for her second career goal to tie the game at 11. Many were thinking about overtime, but Kane won the draw and drove a bouncing shot on net in one final effort. The ball left her stick right before the game clock expired, skipped twice on the turf and then handcuffed PSU keeper Lucy Lowe, bouncing just over her stick for the unlikely game-winner. The victory marked Michigan's first victory over Penn State following a day-long comeback effort that started in disastrous fashion. Penn State dominated play at the outset and scored the first six goals before Michigan got on the board with 13:13 to play in the opening half when Garrett rocketed a cross-body shot to the near post. The Wolverines outshot PSU in the first half by a count of 20-12, but Lowe kept the visitors at bay until Bianca Brueckner bounced home a free-position goal on a low-angle shot with less than two minutes to play in the half to account for the 6-2 halftime margin. One minute into the second half, Michigan scored again -- this time with Caitlin Muir came from behind the cage, carrying the ball with her left hand before dropping down and flinging a crisp shot past Lowe's stick. Michigan then made it a 6-4 game when Kane went to the cage aggressively before stutter-stepping her way into a low-angle shot that successfully tested the near post again. With 26:24 to play in the game, U-M held momentum, but Kristin Roberto ended a 25-minute scoring drought for the home team with a free-position shot to make it 7-4. U-M's Chandler Kirby took a feed from Garrett and rocketed a left-handed shot past Lowe to the near post to again make it a two-goal deficit with 20:55 remaining. U-M narrowly missed a great opportunity on a breakaway and PSU's Kayla Brisoari answered on the other end with a bounce-shot that just snuck under the cross bar for an 8-5 lead with 18:20 to play. With 14:16 to play, Garrett struck again with a low shot to the right of the cage to again bring Michigan within two at 8-6. Michigan was then called for a three-second call on defense and Quinn Nicolai used the opportunity for a free-position goal and a 9-6 lead with 11:12 left. Michigan came back again with a great individual effort from Kane, who ran laterally in front of the eight-meter line and beat Lowe to her stick side to make the core 9-7 with 9:44 remaining. Kane then got a free-position shot but was turned away at point-blank range by Lowe. Following another save by Lowe, Brueckner forced a turnover to provide another opportunity. Garrett answered the call, bouncing a marker to the left-side of the cage to bring U-M within a single goal, 9-8, with 5:39 left. Garrett's tenacity continued as she controlled the draw and ran-in on net uncontested to tie the game at 9 just 10 seconds later. Maria Auth reclaimed the lead for PSU with 3:10 to play as she carried to the right before spinning back left and sending a shot past U-M keeper Alli Kothari. The Wolverines answered again as Grass took a pass from Nadine Stewart and spun in front of the net for a point-blank marker to tie the game at 10. Garret finished the day with four goals, two assists, two ground balls, two forced turnovers and two draw controls. Kane logged a hat trick and added five draw controls while Kothari was again solid in net with 11 saves. Penn State had four different players score two goals while Carter had a game-high six draw controls.
