The Capital University men's lacrosse team (1-1) played an exciting game from wire to wire, squaring off against Elmhurst College (0-2) in a neutral site game at Ohio Northern and claiming their first victory of the season, 13-12, in overtime. Senior captain CJ Hughes picked up where he left off last season, scoring six goals, tying a career-high, and contributing two assists to collect eight points for the game. HOW IT HAPPENED Capital struck first, scoring two quick goals from Nathan Montgomery and Talbott Gottwals to take a 2-0 lead one and a half minutes into the game. The Crusaders scored again in the first quarter but allowed Elmhurst three goals of their own to knot it up 3-3 after the opening 15. Senior Carter McCormick scored quickly to start the second on a man-up opportunity but the goals kept on coming from both sides as time expired on the half with Elmhurst up 6-5. Out of the half, Hughes took charge, scoring three times in the third quarter and along with Gottwals kept the Crusaders in the fight when the fourth quarter started, tied 9-9. The fourth quarter was played just as hard and as close as the first three, as neither team was able to pull away. Hughes scored twice more with Gottwals netting his fourth, and with just seconds to go gave Capital a 12-11 lead. However, the show would go on as Elmhurst's Ben Luke, who scored four goals of his own, tied it up with just four ticks remaining in the game to send it to overtime. Not to be out done, Hughes came back in overtime with a shot from the right side that sailed past the Bluejays goalkeeper and sealed the victory for the Crusaders just 46 seconds into the period. KEY STATS Hughes led the scoring, netting six goals and dishing out two assists while putting 11 shots on goal. Gottwals tied a career-high with four goals on six shots on goal for the day. Senior midfielder Noah McCarty scooped up 10 groundballs to lead both teams in the contest. Sophomore Josh Snyder and freshman Sam McInturf split time in goal with McInturf picking up his first collegiate victory. UP NEXT Capital travels to Kenyon College on Saturday, February 22nd to face off at 1 p.m. in Gambier.
