Middlebury used a five-goal run in the second quarter to erase an early deficit, as the Panthers defeated Bowdoin 14-9 on Saturday in its home opener. The meeting was the 50th between the two programs, with Middlebury holding 33-17 edge in the series. The Panthers (3-3, 2-2) face Union on Wednesday in Syracuse's Carrier Dome at 12:00 p.m., while the Polar Bears (4-3, 2-2) host Endicott at 7:00 p.m. that same day. The visitors jumped out to the early lead, as George Langan tucked a shot in the lower-left corner of the Panther net 2:29 into the contest. Bowdoin doubled its lead with 2:30 left in the frame when Zach Chandler connected on a feed from Sam Denious. Middlebury closed out the scoring in the initial stanza on an unassisted tally by a falling Danny Jacobs. The Polar Bears increased the advantage to 4-1 on tallies by Jeff Powers and Langan, but the hosts responded with the next five goals. Jacobs whipped a high shot past Bowdoin goalie Jack O'Connor with 9:39 left on the clock. Luke Peterson and Alderik van der Heyde scored 19 seconds apart, tying the score at 4-4. The Panthers netted another pair of quick goals, as Frank Cosolito gave the hosts the lead for good as the they carried a 6-5 lead into the intermission. Middlebury continued to find the back of the net in the third quarter, notching the first four scores of the frame. Jack Hoelzer and Jacobs picked up the first two, as A.J. Kucinski made it 9-5 with a leaping shot from the right side. Goree put the Panthers in double figures with his second of the contest just past the midway mark. Bowdoin picked up two of the final three tallies in the stanza, including a marker by Powers with 29.8 seconds left on a shot that bounced off the turf, hit the right post and went in under the cross bar. Zeke Emerson helped Middlebury forge a 13-7 lead 31 seconds into final quarter, intercepting a Polar Bear pass. In transition off thee turnover, Kucinski fed Jacobs for his fourth goal of the game. Kucinski added the final goal for the hosts, while Powers got one of the goals back for Bowdoin with 9:32 remaining. The visitors mustered only one more goal in the final 9:32 minutes for the 14-9 final. Jacobs led all players with four goals and an assist, while Kucinski scored twice and assisted on two others. Jack Gould had a big game winning 17-26 faceoffs and scooping up a game-high 10 ground balls. Alex Farley chipped in with three caused turnovers and Charles Midgley recorded 10 saves to earn the win. Powers and Langan each netted the hat tricks for the Polar Bears, while Ryan Monahn had five ground balls and AJ Bravo forced three turnovers. O'Connor made 16 saves in taking the loss in goal. Middlebury held a 50-40 edge in shots and boasted a 40-32 advantage in ground balls.
