The No. 12 Navy women's lacrosse team (9-3, 4-1 Patriot League) led 12-11 with 16:22 to play, but No. 6 Loyola (9-3, 5-0 PL) used a 5-0 run to take the game 16-12 on Saturday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. "We are disappointed, but Loyola is a really tough team," head coach Cindy Timchal said after the game. "They came in today after a tough loss to Syracuse a couple of days ago. They played us tough. We got a good start and they came back with a big run. We were able to respond in the second half. We are disappointed in the loss, but I am proud of my team for fighting all the way. A couple of things didn't go our way, but if we clean things up it could've been different. Losing to Loyola is a tough loss for Navy women's lacrosse, but we are going to move forward from here and begin again as we play Virginia on Wednesday." Offensively, the Midshipmen were led by Kelly Larkin (Alexandria, Va.) who led the team with six points on a team-high four goals and a team-best two assists. For Larkin, it was her sixth hat trick of the season and the 18th of her career. She was joined by Kayla Harris (Annapolis, Md.), Meg O'Donnell (Forrest Hill, Md.), and Andie O'Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) who added two goals apiece. Jenna and Julia Collins (Clarksville, Md.) chipped in two points apiece each scoring one goal and adding an assist. Defensively, Ingrid Boyum tied a career high with 14 saves in a complete-game effort. She was charged with the loss, surrendering 16 goals. It was the third time this season that she had double-digit saves and the 11th time in her career with 10 or more saves. Boyum picked up a pair of ground balls, while Larkin and Marie Valenti (Bechtelsville, Pa.) led the team with three ground balls each. Larkin and Blake Smith (Sykesville, Md.) paced the team with two caused turnovers apiece. Navy opened up the scoring, finding the back of the net with 28:28 on the clock. Larkin circled around the goal and buried the ball in the back of the net to put the Mids in front 1-0 early. Following a Loyola equalizer, the Mids used a 3-0 run to take a 4-1 advantage. Larkin scored a pair around a Harris goal to take a three-goal advantage. Loyola responded with a 7-0 run to take an 8-4 lead. The Greyhounds' Taylor VanThof and Livy Rosenzweig sparked the run with two goals apiece and Rosenzweig chipped in a pair of helpers for four points in the run. The Midshipmen used a goal by O'Donnell with just over a minute to play in the half to end the run and close the gap to 8-5 just before intermission. Jenna Collins converted a free-position opportunity to start the scoring in the second half, but the Greyhounds netted back-to-back goals to push the advantage to 10-6 with 22:44 to play. Navy used a 5-0 run to regain the lead at 11-10. O'Sullivan began the run with an unassisted goal, taking the ball from midfield straight to the goal for her first goal of the game. O'Donnell converted a pass from Larkin to trim the Loyola lead to two. Larkin fed Harris in front of the goal and Harris found the back of the net to pull Navy to within one. Larkin called her own number and found pay dirt, knotting the score at 10-10 with 19:34 to play. O'Sullivan concluded the run with an unassisted goal to put the Midshipmen in front for the first time since the first half. VanThof knotted the game at 11, but Julia Collins answered with a goal to give the Mids a 12-11 advantage with 16:22. It would be all Loyola for the final 11:29 to play as the Greyhounds closed out the game with a 5-0 run to claim the 16-12 victory. Following Navy's made goal at the 16:22 mark, Loyola made a goalie change, inserting Kaitlyn Larsson in the cage. Larsson was able to thwart the Midshipmen's offensive attack. The Mids recorded eight shots in the final 16 minutes of play, including five on goal, but Larsson made five shots to keep Navy off the scoreboard and seal the win for Loyola. Navy returns to action on Wednesday, April 11, as the Midshipmen welcome nationally-ranked Virginia to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for a nonconference matchup. Opening draw is slated for 7:00 p.m.
