The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team capped its regular season with a 16-10 Senior Day win over Ferrum on Saturday evening. Connor McLean and senior Sean MacLeish each had hat tricks to lead the attack, while Jared Barley and senior Jake Truman each caused three turnovers. Eric Husselbaugh found MacLeish wide open in front of the cage to open the scoring for Bridgewater less than three minutes in. Ferrum tied it at 2-2 on a pair of goals by Jacob Boswell, the second from way outside. Senior Hunter Bagby (12 saves) made a nice stop on Austin Nowlin to prevent the visitors from taking the lead, and Truman scored in transition to put BC back on the top. Jake Pangle ripped a shot off the post on the next possession, before goals by McLean and Kyle Graham made it 4-2. Defender Joey Pellegrino scored an impressive goal with the long pole to make it 6-2 Eagles, dancing between two defenders and putting some touch on his finish up high. Ferrum would rally with four straight however, including another deep strike by Boswell, to tie it at 6-6 midway through the second. Defenseman Jared Barley picked up his first career assist in unusual fashion late in the second quarter. With the shot clock running down, Ferrum's Michael Paolicelli tried to intentionally give the ball to Barley and then immediately check it back away. Barley launched it the length of the field, where McLean was standing all alone in front of the cage. It was part of a three-goal BC run to end the half and take a 9-6 lead into the break. Ferrum made another run in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to two at 12-10 and picking up a man-advantage chance on the play. Mason Gauntt won the faceoff and scored shorthanded however, and Bridgewater added three straight man-up goals late (one by Lucas Johnson, two by MacLeish). It was Senior Day, and the Eagles recognized their graduating class of nine players- Truman, MacLeish, Bagby, Jacob Clemmer, Hunter Callan, Taylor Phipps, Tyler Nieto, William Spinnler and Eric Mudd. MacLeish holds the school assist record with 61, while Truman is now two caused turnovers shy of the school record of 83. Bridgewater also held a moment of silence for Josh Olshaw, who passed away in 2015 as a freshman member of the team and who would have been a senior this season. Bridgewater (13-4, 6-4 ODAC) won for the ninth time at home this year and will enter the ODAC playoffs as the sixth seed. The Eagles will travel to Hampden-Sydney on Tuesday, having taken the regular season meeting between the teams 14-13 on the Jopson turf.
