The American University lacrosse team was the first to get on the board during Wednesday's game to No. 11 Navy, but the Eagles eventually fell to the Midshipmen, 24-5. AU enters the final stretch of the regular season with a 3-11 overall record, 0-6 in the Patriot League, while the Mids continue to rank second in the conference at 12-3 overall, 6-1 in the league. Sophomore Erica Skowron scored an early goal after a scuffle in front of the Navy net in the second minute of the game, giving the Eagles their only lead of the contest at 1-0. Classmates Casey Harkins and Izabella Jade also added to the Eagles' final tally with one goal each while freshman Emma Vinall led the team with a pair of goals. Sophomore Medjid added AU's only assist of the day. Sophomore Ana Freda led the team from the net for the majority of the game and came away with six saves while freshman Delaney Oliveira earned a pair of saves in her 24 minutes of play. Kelly Larkin and Jenna Collins led Navy's offense with five goals each, followed by four from Julia Collins. Ten Midshipmen contributed to Navy's final point tally while five added assists, including four from both Larkin and Jenna Collins. Gab Harchelroad led the team from goal with three saves off seven shots in 35 minutes of play. Autumn Koh added a pair of saves while Annie Maloney came away with one. Navy put away 10 unanswered goals after the Eagles' first before Vinall put away a low shot off a free position attempt to bring the score up to 10-2 with 15:21 remaining in the first half. Harkins and Jade put up back-to-back goals to land back within nine after a three-goal run pushed the Mids' to an 11-point advantage, but a pair of unanswered goals to close the half brought Navy back up, 15-4. The Eagles had a few good looks in the second half but were unable to capitalize until the final 11 minutes when Vinall added her second of the day off a pass from Medjid. The Mids closed with a 9-1 advantage in the last 30 minutes to close the game at 24-5. The Mids held a 24-7 advantage in draw controls, 16-7 in ground balls and 37-15 in shots. UP NEXT… The Eagles will travel to Holy Cross on Saturday for a 2 p.m. draw. For the latest on American Lacrosse, stay tuned to AUEagles.com and follow the team on Twitter @AU_Lacrosse.
