The No. 11 Navy women's lacrosse team (13-3, 7-1 Patriot League) picked up a 19-9 victory over Lafayette (4-11, 1-6) on the road on Saturday afternoon at Fisher Stadium. With the win, the Midshipmen secure the No. 2 overall seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament. "It was Lafayette's Senior Day and their last game and they really played us tough," head coach Cindy Timchal said after the game. "I am proud of the team for coming together and stringing together some goals and winning some draws. It was good to get some players in. It was a nice victory on the road. "It is great to be one of the top two seeds in our conference, second to a very strong Loyola team. I am very pleased coming through the conference. We have one more home game at home against BU. It will be a tough game, but also an opportunity to honor our seniors." Offensively, Navy scored 19 goals on 39 shots, including 27 on goal. Over the last three games, the Midshipmen are averaging 21 goals per game, while surrendering just seven per game. The Mids were led by six players who combined to score all 19 goals. Jenna Collins (Clarksville, Md.) led the way with six goals, while Kelly Larkin (Alexandria, Va.) set a new career-high with 10 points, scoring five goals and a team-high five assists. Julia Collins (Clarksville, Md.) and Molly O'Sullivan (Centreville, Va.) each had hat tricks on the day, scoring three goals apiece. Caitlin Blanche (Crofton, Md.) and Marina Lazarides (Westminster, Md.) each added goals on the day. Julia Collins and Andie O'Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) rounded out the assists with a helper piece. Navy picked up 18 ground balls, compared to 11 by Lafayette, while also holding a 16-13 advantage in draw controls. Annalise Heyward (Charlotte, N.C.) paced the team with six draw controls, while Jenna and Julia Collins added five and three draws, respectively. Marie Valenti (Bechtelsville, Pa.) led the team with four ground balls in the game, while Blake Smith (Sykesville, Md.) picked up three ground balls. Ingrid Boyum (Herndon, Va.) earned her 12th victory of the season, working 54:47 between the pipes. The senior allowed eight goals, while posting four saves before giving way to Gab Harchelroad (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who closed the final 5:13 with a goal and a save. Navy opened the game quickly, rattling off three goals in the first two minutes. Julia Collins started the scoring, and Molly O'Sullivan followed with a goal off a Larkin assist. Larkin finished the 3-0 run with an unassisted goal to put the Mids up 3-0. Lafayette found the back of the net to trim the score to 3-1, but back-to-back goals by Julia and Jenna Collins extended the advantage to 5-1. The Leopards scored a pair of goals around a Jenna Collins goal to cut the deficit to 6-3. The Midshipmen extended the advantage to 9-3 with a pair of Larking goals and Julia Collins' third goal of the ball game. The Leopards pulled to within four with back-to-back goals, but the Mids answerd with three straight goals to close the half. Jenna Collins scored two goals in the 3-0 run to close the half, while Molly O'Sullivan also chipped in a goal before half. In the second half, a free-position goal by Lafayette started the half, but Navy responded with five consecutive goals to extend the lead to 17-6. Molly O'Sullivan started the run off a Larkin assist. Lazarides took a pass from Andie O'Sullivan and put it in the back of the net. Larkin followed with two goals and an assist on a Jenna Collins goal to give Navy an 11-goal edge. Back-to-back goals by Lafayette trimmed the led to nine, but goals by Jenna Collins and Blanche put the Midshipmen in front 19-8. With 20 seconds remaining, the Leopards scored to provide the final score, 19-9. Navy returns to action on Saturday, April 28, as the Midshipmen host Boston University in a 1:00 p.m. game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The game will serve as Senior Day, and the Mids will recognize their nine seniors prior to the game.
