Junior Maddie Fields made a career-high 16 saves in net and freshman Katie Whelan posted a season-best five goals as the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team battled #2 Maryland before falling, 17-10, on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops Hofstra's record to 2-2 on the season, while Maryland improves to 4-1. Megan Whittle led the Terps with seven points on five goals and two assists. Whelan scored the game's first goal less than 90 seconds into the contest and Hofstra would lead the game, 3-2, with 17:58 left in the opening stanza following another Whelan goal off an assist from sophomore Alexa Mattera. Maryland rebounded and scored five straight goals en route to an 11-4 halftime advantage. Hofstra came out of the intermission on fire as the Pride scored two of the first three goals of the second half and five of the first seven to close the gap to 13-9 with 18:09 left in regulation. Whelan had three of the goals during the run with Parrella accounting for the other two. With the gap at four goals, Maryland was forced to call a timeout to stop the Pride's momentum. The Terps answered with three goals of their own to end any thoughts of a Hofstra comeback. Whelan added five draw controls, while Fields and senior Drew Shapiro tallied a pair of ground balls. Sophomore Darcie Smith had three caused turnovers for the Pride. Jen Giles had three goals and three ground balls for Maryland. Hofstra is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Quinnipiac for a 3 p.m. game.
