The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team battled defensively but ultimately fell to No. 2 Maryland, 16-9, on Saturday (March 31) inside U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Junior goalie Mira Shane finished with a career-high 14 saves in cage for the Wolverines, tying former Wolverine Allison Silber for second all-time in a single game at Michigan. Overall, five Wolverines scored in the effort: graduate student Bianca Brueckner (3), junior Adriana Pendino (2), sophomore Molly Garrett (2), sophomore Lilly Grass (1) and freshman Caitlin Muir (1). With her three goals, Brueckner remains the only Wolverine to have scored in all games she has appeared in this season (11). It was her third game of the season scoring more than one goal and second straight with a hat trick. Garrett's two goals mark her second multi-goal game of the season. In addition to her two goals, Pendino added a career-high five draw controls, accounting for half of Michigan's 10. The Terrapins got off to a quick start, scoring four goals in the first six minutes. Shane made an impact in goal, recording five saves in the first 10 minutes before Grass put U-M on the board at 15:52. Maryland added three more goals over a 3:11 span to grow its lead to 7-1 at the 10:49 mark. Muir ended the Maryland scoring run at 9:19, as she curled around the crease, roll-dodged her defender and scored unassisted. Less than a minute later, Garrett drove up the middle to net another for the Wolverines to make it 7-3 with 8:03 remaining in the first half. After another Maryland goal, Muir connected with Brueckner at 4:13 to keep the Wolverines within four, 8-4. The Terrapins netted another before the half ended to hold a 9-4 advantage. To begin the second half, Maryland scored on a free-position attempt at the 28:46 mark to grow its lead to six, 10-4. Michigan responded as Garrett sent a dagger from just inside the top of the eight-meter arc to make it 10-5 at 27:52. Over the next three minutes, Maryland put up three unanswered goals to increase its lead to 13-5 with 24:37 remaining. Brueckner scored her second goal of the afternoon on a free-position attempt at 22:39 to make it 13-6. After a scoreless seven minutes, the Terrapins netted three in a row, making it 16-6 with 12:20 left to play. The Maize and Blue finished out the game with three unanswered goals to make the final score 16-9. The first came from Pendino as she cut across the middle to net her first of the game. Brueckner completed her hat trick with a free-position goal at the 6:22 mark and Pendino recorded her second goal of the game on a man-down free-position goal with 1:48 on the clock. The short-handed goal marked Michigan's first of the season. The Wolverines will have a quick turnaround for their next game, where they will travel to South Bend, Indiana, to take on Notre Dame on Tuesday (April 3) at 7 p.m.
