The Marietta College men's lacrosse team was in action Saturday (March 16) as they were defeated by Calvin College, 13-5. With the loss the Pioneers fall to 2-3 overall and the Knights improve to 5-2 on the season. The first quarter opened as a defensive battle, with the opening five minutes of the game being scoreless. Calvin opened the scoring with back to back goals and notched a 2-0 lead with just over eight minutes to play in the opening quarter. After six minutes of back and forth action the Knights added a third consecutive goal, but with less than a minute to play in the quarter Quinn Rundgren (Angier, N.C./Fuquay Varina) put Marietta on the board, and the Pioneers entered the second quarter behind, 3-1. Calvin outscored the Pioneers 4-0 in the second quarter, and Marietta trailed 7-1 to enter the intermission. The Pioneers came out of the locker room ready to play as Connor Ficke (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) scored the opening goal of the second half at the 12:02 minute mark. The Knights scored back to back goals before Ficke found the back of the net for his second goal of the game, with seven minutes to play in the third quarter. Calvin answered to score the final three goals of the quarter and entered the final frame ahead, 12-3. The Knights scored the opening goal of the fourth quarter, 45 seconds into the final frame. Five minutes later Marietta answered when Ficke found the back of the net for his third goal of the game. The Pioneers scored their second consecutive goal when Jayson White (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) scored off a feed from Rundgren, with four and a half minutes to play in the game. Marietta continued to battle but fell, 13-5. The Pioneers were led by Ficke as he had three goals and a ground ball in the game. Rundgren added one goal, two assists, a pair of groundballs, and a caused turnover in the game. White added a goal in the game for Marietta. Ryan McLane (Avon, Ohio/Avon) was in net for the Pioneers, he faced 47 shots, 24 of which were on goal, and made 11 saves. Marietta will be back in action Wednesday (March 20) when they host Bethany College with the game scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Fans can follow all the Pioneer teams all year long at pioneers.marietta.edu.
