Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State men's lacrosse team rallied from a three-goal fourth-quarter deficit, and JOE COVINO scored with 58 seconds left in overtime to give the Red Hawks a 13-12 win Wednesday night. The Red Hawks (1-2) trailed 12-9 with 6:49 remaining but scored the final four goals to earn their first win of the young season. The Knights (1-1) were paced by four goals and three assists from Colin Blake. CHRISTIAN BOYLE opened the scoring just 26 seconds in the game before Neumann equalized two minutes later. Both sides nearly added to their total, but each had shots ring off of the post. Montclair broke through for a second goal, with MIKE MCCREERY snapping the 1-1 tie at the 5:58 mark. The Knights tallied the following three markers, including two exactly 80 apart. ROBERT BRENNAN broke the visitors' run with a goal from MIKE MCCREERY before Max Nice scored off Drew Conlon's feed. The Red Hawks stymied the Knights for the remainder of the half, with goalkeeper MATTHEW MCLAREN making several saves. With 3:35 left, TIM KNUTELSKY forced a turnover and raced into the opposing half of the field. The long-pole dished off to MIKE MCCREERY, who converted, bringing the score to 5-4. Late in the half, Covino rang a shot off the pipe again. MATT DANCSECS was there in front, scooping up the ground ball and scoring to tie the game at five entering the half. The Knights began the second half with the first two goals before TYLER MCCREERY and CONNOR MCCOY notched goals to tie the game once again, this time at seven. Neumann would close the period with the final two markers, but MIKE MCCREERY opened the fourth period scoring with a goal from his brother Tyler. Montclair clawed back and tied things once again at nine as Dancsecs potted his second of the day, but the game remained tied for all of 20 seconds. Blake sparked a 3-0 rally by the guests, and Drew Conlon finished the run off with a goal from Blake with 6:49 left. Brennan got the Red Hawks to within a pair at 12-10. Coming off a timeout, Covino recorded his first of the game, with TYLER MCCREERY getting the helper. The Red Hawks won the ensuing face-off, with WILSON SMITH grabbing the ground ball. Montclair State worked the ball around before Covino fed Dancsecs for the equalizer with 1:48 left. KYLE MATTHEWS won another crucial face-off, but the Red Hawks couldn't capitalize on three scoring chances, and the game moved into the extra session. Both teams had turnovers in overtime, but the final one proved to be the most costly. Smith forced Brett McLaughlin into a turnover, and NICK DETORE scooped up the loose ball. After a successful clear, the Red Hawks needed just one shot to win it. TYLER MCCREERY was behind the goal and passed out to Covino, who took a step and fired past the goalkeeper to give MSU the win. TYLER MCCREERY had a goal and five assists, while brother Mike had three goals and an assist. Dancsecs also netted a hat-trick, as TYLER MCCREERY, Smith, and Matthews each had six ground balls. Matthews won 19-of-29 face-offs, while McLaren made eight saves. Brendan Risley had 15 stops for Neumann, who also received three goals and three helpers from Conlon. The Red Hawks hit the road for the firsttime, taking on Gwynedd Mercy Saturday at 1 pm.
