Rhodes College men's lacrosse overcame a six-goal deficit Tuesday to hand Carthage College their first loss of the season. Both teams are now 4-1 on the season. Matt Perez tallied the first goal of the game but a 9-2 run from Carthage put the Red Men ahead 9-3 at halftime. David Perez scored first in the second half before Carthage took advantage of a Lynx penalty to go back up by six. With Carthage ahead 11-5, Rhodes' offensive came alive as the Lynx rallied for six straight goals, including three from the Perez brothers to tie the game 11-11 with 2:44 to play. Rhodes won the ensuing face-off but both teams committed multiple turnovers trying to score in regulation. After Carthage rattled off two shots wide of the net, the Lynx backed up the latter, but then missed two shots on their offensive end as time ran down. Another face-off win from J.J. Hoots gave the Lynx their first shot just eight seconds into overtime. Carthage's Kyle Guthrie made the save, but Matt Perez came up with the ground ball for Rhodes allowing Coach Zazzaro to call a timeout. Freshman Karl Van Blargan's shot was blocked but Addison Mueller kept possession for Rhodes with the ground ball. Andrew Lempner caught the ball on the outside and found David Perez wide open in the middle of the Red Men zone. Perez pump faked and laid the ball in the top corner for the game-winner, erupting fans in the stands. The Lynx dog-piled Perez and company in the Southeast corner of the field in celebration. Mueller and the Perez brothers all tallied three goals while Van Blargan and Ryan Marasco netted one goal each. Also scoring his first collegiate goal was Tyler Pellegrino while Mac Ference and Tyler Milwit tallied the two other assists for the Lynx. Hoots won 12-of-17 face-off attempts and teammate Will Perryman won all but one of his six attempts. Hoots led the Lynx with 10 ground balls followed by Alexi Thomas with eight and Mueller with six. This week's SAA Defensive Player of the Week, Cameron Link, made seven saves in cage for Rhodes. The CCIW Offensive Player of the Week, Noah Lindner, tallied all four of his goals in the first half. The conference's Defensive Player of the Week, Tanner Jones, picked up three ground balls and went 6-of-17 in face-offs. Carthage had received votes in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll. Overall, Rhodes held a 59-38 shot advantage, shut out Carthage in the fourth quarter, and went 12-of-15 in clears. The Lynx will turn to face Muhlenberg, who also picked up USILA votes, for a 1 p.m. home contest on March 7.
