Fighting for a spot in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) tournament, the North Central College men's lacrosse team held onto a lead for the first 45-minutes of play against Carthage College (13-4, 4-2 CCIW) on Sunday afternoon but fell victim to a five-goal rally in the fourth period that sent the game to overtime and ended in favor of the Red Men. The first 15-minutes of play saw both teams deadlocked at 1-1 after Noah Lindner notched for the first goal for Carthage just over two minutes into the game and Danny Boyle connected with Jared Weaver at 8:37. North Central took the lead back less than a minute into the second period as Tommy Huizinga scored his first goal of the game. The Red Men tied it back up but it was short lived as Huizinga scored again with just over 11 minutes until the half. The Cardinals found momentum after Weaver, Boyle and Noah Parrill all scored goals to give North Central the 6-3 lead going into the locker room. The Red Men struck early to open the third period, scoring back-to-back goals in the opening five minutes to come within one of North Central, but Tanner James found an open Steven Faux 30-seconds into a Carthage penalty to regain a two-point lead. Carthage scored again once they returned to full-strength but Weaver and Huizinga each scored to close out the third period and hold onto a 9-7 lead. North Central scored two goals to go ahead by four in the fourth period, but the Red Men responded with four-straight to tie the game 11-11 with six minutes left in regulation. Huizinga put one past goalkeeper Sam Kotsonas to lead 12-11 with 4:27 left to play, but Carthage's Colin Poitras scored with four second remaining on the clock to send the game into overtime. For the second time in as many games, the Cardinals found themselves going into extra minutes, but unlike their game against the University of Dubuque, they struggled to generate offense. A costly turnover at the start of overtime gave Carthage the possession it needed to capitalize, scoring just two minutes into play and ending the game and the Cardinals' 2019 campaign. Huizinga paced the team with four goals and two assists while Weaver added three and Parrill had two. Jacob Ray had eight ground balls and was 12-27 at the faceoff while five Cardinals had one caused turnovers a piece. In goal, Dylan Cost capped off his career with 15 saves, bringing his season total to 149. The Cardinals finished the season with a record of 9-5, 3-4 in CCIW action.
