The Stony Brook men's lacrosse team played inside the Carrier Dome for the first time in program history on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Seawolves, they fell in their first-ever meeting with Syracuse. The seventh-ranked Orange defeated Stony Brook, 17-9. Stony Brook had rattled off three straight goals, including a pair from Cory VanGinhoven, early in the second quarter to pull within 5-4. However, Syracuse responded with nine unanswered goals to open a double-digit lead. Dylan Pallonetti snapped the Seawolves' 19 minute, 11 second scoring drought late in the third quarter. Pallonetti, VanGinhoven, Matt DeMeo and Mike McMahon had two goals apiece in the defeat. McMahon's goals were the first of his career. "We knew this was going to be a battle, and for us to win we were going to have to possess the ball, finish our opportunities on offense, play great team defense and clear the ball," coach Anthony Gilardi said. "We struggled early at the faceoff X and missed some early opportunities on offense, and they capitalized. We settled down to cut it to one, then just couldn't make enough positive plays to stop their run." The Seawolves (2-3), who received votes in this week's USILA poll after peaking at No. 17 earlier this season, return to America East play on Sunday when they host NJIT at 3 p.m. at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
