Senior Max Weese (Hilliard/Darby) became the first Ohio Northern men's lacrosse player to score 100 career goals, leading ONU to a 15-8 victory over Wittenberg on Tuesday night at Dial-Roberson Stadium. The Polar Bears end their non-conference schedule with a solid 6-1 record, while the Tigers fall to 1-5. Weese scored twice in the first 11:11 of the game to reach the 100-goal plateau in 50 career games. Senior Anthony Pavone (Bainbridge/Kenston) picked up his seventh career hat trick with a team-high three goals for ONU. Weese, senior Nicholas Groves (Fishers, Ind./Chatard) and juniors Cameron Marous (Brecksville) and Patrick Moran (Austin, Tex./Bowie) all added two goals for the hosts. Marous also had three assists for five points. Matthew Welch had three goals to lead the Tigers. Senior goalie Alex Pizarro (Boonsboro, Md.) had eight of his 10 saves in the second half as ONU outscored WU 8-3 after holding a 7-5 lead at intermission. Northern jumped to a 4-1 lead 11:11 into the game on Weese's two goals and scores by Pavone and sophomore Mason Schmeling (Columbus/Hilliard/Darby). The ONU lead was 11-8 when Pavone scored at the 11:40 mark of the fourth quarter. Groves, Moran and Marous followed with goals as Northern held Wittenberg scoreless over the final 12:39 of the contest to seal the victory. The Polar Bears outshot the Tigers 42-32 and won the ground ball battle 36-31. Sophomore Preston Victory (Brentwood, Tenn.) was 11-for-13 and senior William Peoples (Breckenridge, Colo./Summit) was 5-for-6 to lead ONU to an impressive 18-8 advantage in the faceoff circle. The Polar Bears will begin Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a 1 pm contest against Wilmington at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
