Senior Nicholas Miller scored five goals and assisted on another as the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team upended SUNY Geneseo, 10-6, on Saturday in a non-conference tilt inside Growney Stadium. Fisher, which is ranked 13th in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll, improved to 3-0 while the Knights fell to 0-1. It didn't take long for Fisher to strike as Tucker O'Donnell beat his man before dumping it off to Brennan O'Brien for a goal to make it 1-0. The advantage was short-lived, however, as Geneseo leveled the score just 30 seconds later on a feed across the middle and would take a 2-1 advantage at 9:02 of the first period after sneaking one past Fisher's keeper, Darin Eakins. Trailing by one, Fisher turned defense into offense as the Cardinals forced a turnover and quickly cleared the ball. After working the ball around the cage, Samuel Miller hit Miller on the wing as the Ithaca native uncorked a shot that found its mark to make it 2-2. Just six seconds later, Miller would strike again after Joe Post won a faceoff and hit Miller in stride to make it 3-2 in the home team's favor. The rally continued for Fisher with just over five minutes to play in the first after Geneseo coughed it up in its own end before Ian Evans connected with O'Donnell to push the lead to two goals. As the period wore on, Geneseo would pull to within one, 4-3, but found itself in a four-goal hole as Matthew Kemmis and Jack Mulvihill combined to score three goals in a span on 2:01 to make it 7-3. The Knights would get one back midway through the quarter, but were unable to generate any momentum as the Cardinals allowed just two shots over the final 7:31 to take a 7-4 lead into the break. As the third frame got underway, Geneseo would pull to within two goals, only to see Fisher answer when Miller pushed the lead back to three goals with Jordan Depetres being credited with an assist. From there, Fisher continued to adjust and opened up a four-goal cushion after Mulvihill found Miller for his fourth tally of the game to make it 9-5. With time running out on the Knights, Geneseo was able to find the back of the net with 7:49 still left in the game, but was unable to stop Miller on the other end of the field as the attackman notched another goal on a pass from Evans to close out the game, 10-6. Post was nothing short of dominant at the faceoff X as the senior went 18-for-20 and had 16 ground balls. Defensively, Brian Jantz was credited with causing three turnovers while Evans and Kyle Rochester each had two caused turnovers in the win. Eakins played all 60 minutes in goal and made six saves as the net minder moved to 3-0 on the year. Fisher will look for its fourth win of the season at 7 p.m. on Wednesday when it faces its biggest test of the season, the top-ranked Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers on the road.
