Junior Keaton McCann scored four goals and first-year Dan Donahue made 15 saves in his collegiate debut as the #15 Union College men's lacrosse team defeated #7 St. Lawrence University by a 10-6 score in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium. The game was filled with many standout performances, led by McCann, who has 10 goals through his first two games after a four-goal effort to lead all players. Classmate Peter Burnes also had a great game with a goal and two assists, while first-year Peter Kip scored two goals with an assist in his debut for Union (2-0, 1-0 Liberty League). Most notably though was Donahue, who had an excellent outing in saving 15-of-21 on-target attempts to earn his first career win. St. Lawrence (4-1, 2-1 Liberty League) was led by Peter Koch and Mark Mahoney who each had two goals, and goalie William Helm, who had 17 saves. Union had control for much of the opening quarter, beginning when Burnes netted the first goal of the game with 10:04 left in the first period. McCann then scored another two goals in less than a minute for the Dutchmen, and the score remained 3-0 until Mahoney found the net with one second left in the period. The Saints seemed to get some momentum from that last-second goal, as tallies by Jack Henessey and Koch tied the game at three with 9:52 left in the second stanza. However, the rest of the period belonged to Union, as senior Brian Davis put the Dutchmen back ahead and tallies by McCann and Kip gave Union a 6-3 lead headed into halftime. Union continued to increase the pressure both offensively and defensively in the third quarter, outsourcing SLU 3-0 to extend its lead. Kip scored his second of the game, senior Hayden Frey netted his first, and junior Jack Donahue also found the net to make the score 9-3 going into the final period. St. Lawrence outscored Union 3-1 in the final frame, but it was not enough to mount a serious comeback attempt. Koch's second of the game with 7:31 left broke a scoreless streak of more than 32 minutes and Mahoney followed with a goal off the subsequent faceoff, but McCann's fourth of the game with 4:27 helped to seal the win. The Dutchmen are slated to continue LIberty League play next Saturday with a home game against the Vassar Brewers.
