NORTH CANTON, Ohio – After the initial Cavaliers goal, it was the Cardinals in control. Wheeling Jesuit put together its best men's lacrosse match of the season on the strength of five early scores in a row and vault over Walsh, 13-5. Dereck Downs started the Cardinals (2-7) surge with back-to-back goals, two minutes apart in the first five minutes. Luke Gilman added a man down score and WJU went out to a 5-1 lead and never look back against Walsh (1-8). "Truly, accountability and discipline got us this win today. The last two weeks have been tough, but it has set the tone for something bigger. Every single guy in our locker room should be proud of what we accomplished today. Culture is what turns a team into a program. We're definitely working towards having a program with incredible heart and work ethic," explained WJU head coach Landon DelPrince. "I am also very happy for Jamison Smith about getting his first collegiate start. I expect a lot more from him moving forward. Jordan Getz stepped in at attack second quarter and played extremely well as he made plays when he had to and controlled the tempo of the game. The future is bright for the Cards." Along with Downs' three-goal and one-assist game, Jordan Getz finished strong in the late game and totaled four goals and a trio of assists. Travis Getz netted his own 'hat trick' and assisted on one more WJU score. Joe Wright added a goal, two assists and three ground balls. Gilman and Michael Tighe completed the Cardinals goal scorers. The WJU defense held its opponent to the lowest goal total of the 2017 season, five goals. Scotty Gwyn scooped seven ground balls and caused a turnover, while Jack Brandenberg was the reason for three Walsh turnovers and had two ground balls. Goalie Jake Lilly saved 11 Cavaliers shots. WJU took a 5-2 lead into the intermission after its five-straight goals between single Walsh scores. In the second half, the Getz brothers took over for the Cardinals. Between Jordan and Travis, they combined for the first five WJU second-half goals and helped the team to a 10-4 advantage with 12:26 left in the match. Jordan assisted on the 11th and 12th visitor scores, before Travis netted the final goal in the win.
