DANBURY, CT – Reigning Little East Conference Player & Rookie of the Week Donald Schaumloffel (Wantagh, NY) and senior Robert Swensen (Danbury, CT) each netted four goals to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team to a 12-8 non-league victory over visiting Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday night at Feldman Arena. With the home-opening win, the Colonials improved to 2-0 overall, while the Knights dropped to 1-1. Junior middie Ryan Reuling (Groton, CT) added a goal and two assists, while classmate attackman Eric Caldwell (East Moriches, NY) dished out a pair of helpers for the Colonials. Reserve junior midfielder Timothy Yannucci (Coram, NY) also chipped in with a scoring strike and two assists. Sophomore middie Thomas Bahmer III (East Brunswick, NJ) notched a hat trick to lead the Knights, while five other players would tickle the twine. The hosts finished ahead in shots, 38-28, groundballs, 25-22, and face-off wins, 14-7. WestConn sophomore goalkeeper Perry Cassidy (East Setauket, NY) improved to 2-0 and finished with 12 saves, while junior netminder Eli Laikin (Oak Bluffs, MA) dropped to 1-1 and recorded eight. The hosts broke the ice less than two minutes into the contest when Schaumloffel tallied his fifth goal of the year off a feed from Yannucci. They extended the advantage to 6-2 when Yanucci fired home a shot, assisted by Caldwell shortly before the end of the first quarter. The Knights put together a 5-1 rally, slicing the gap to 8-7 when Bahmer tallied his second goal of the night off a pretty pass from rookie Brian Esposito (Floral Park, NY) midway through the third. However, the Colonials countered with the next four scoring strikes to cement the win. WestConn returns to action against visiting non-conference foe St. Joseph-LI on Saturday at 3 p.m. while Mount Saint Mary hosts Bryn Athyn at 1 p.m.
